Sheffield United are more ‘likely’ to sign ‘brilliant’ player than Leeds right now

Sheffield United managed to prise Jamie Shackleton away from Leeds United earlier this month and they are now keen to win the race for another player of interest to the Whites.

Shackleton had been out of contract at Elland Road but Daniel Farke was keen to keep him with the offer of a new deal.

However, due to a lack of game time, Shackleton opted to snub the opportunity to stay at his boyhood club and end his 17-year spell at Leeds by signing a three-year-deal at Bramall Lane.

The Blades have had a tricky start to the summer due to ongoing talks over a takeover, but the signing of Shackleton has somewhat kick started their business.

Sam McCallum joined Shackleton in signing on a free earlier this week, while Kieffer Moore looks set to be the first player they will pay a fee for, as per reports.

Liam Millar’s most likely destination this summer now revealed

One position Leeds have been extensively looking at this summer is wingers, but any further movement is likely to depend on the futures of Crysencio Summerville and Willy Gnonto.

The two young stars have been heavily linked with exits since the play-off final defeat, though Leeds do feel they are in a better position to keep them after Archie Gray’s exit.

One potential target who has been identified in case one or both of them leave is ‘brilliant‘ FC Basel winger Liam Millar, who spent last season on loan at Preston North End.

Leeds have been watching him in action at the Copa America for Canada under Jesse Marsch in the last few weeks, with tonight’s third and fourth place play-off set to bring his tournament to an end.

Sheffield United are among the other sides to have been linked with Millar, and according to the Yorkshire Evening Post, it is the Blades who are the most likely destination.

Millar has a release clause in his contract meaning a deal could be done quickly and due to the uncertainty with Leeds’ winger situation, Chris Wilder can make his move first.

Leeds would need better than Millar anyway

If Leeds are to lose both Summerville and Gnonto, that would be a combined tally of 27 league goals from last season’s team gone.

The 49ers could quite easily command in excess of £50 million for the pair of them, giving Leeds plenty of money to spend on replacements.

Given how much quality Summerville and Gnonto have at this level, Millar simply would not be a suitable replacement as a starter for them anyway.

As such, if Sheffield United are to win the race, it really would not be much of a blow to Leeds‘ summer window.
