Leeds United are closing in on signing Sean Longstaff and his ideal squad number is up for grabs at Elland Road.

It looks set to be a busy week in the transfer window for Leeds United, as Daniel Farke aims to add even more strength and experience to his squad.

Gabriel Gudmundsson is expected to be confirmed as Leeds’ fourth signing of the summer on Tuesday, with the Whites landing their Junior Firpo replacement for around £10.3m.

Gudmundsson will become the third defender to join Leeds following the arrivals of Jaka Bijol and Sebastiaan Bornauw, while the free signing of Lukas Nmecha provides some attacking reinforcement.

The next position Leeds are looking to strengthen in is midfield, with numbers light in the middle of the park following the exits of Joe Rothwell and Josuha Guilavogui.

Leeds are looking to add at least two midfielders to the squad and one could be confirmed this week in the shape of Sean Longstaff.

Leeds are closing in on Longstaff after submitting a £12m bid to Newcastle, with £10m guaranteed and a further £2m in bonuses.

Should Longstaff arrive, then his favourite shirt number is available at Elland Road.

Sean Longstaff could claim favourite shirt number at Elland Road

Newcastle native Longstaff broke into his boyhood club’s first team in 2018, and he has worn the No.36 shirt ever since.

Despite having ample opportunity to change to a lower, more coveted number during his time at St. James’ Park, he kept with the same shirt.

The number might have sentimental appeal to Longstaff and, if so, he’s in luck, as it’s up for grabs if he wants to keep it upon his expected transfer to Leeds.

The No.36 hasn’t been worn at Leeds since it was last occupied by Robbie Gotts in 2021, and it hasn’t had many prestigious wearers at all. The full list of former Leeds No.36s is:

Longstaff would have the chance to make the shirt his own if he selects it at Leeds.

Other shirt number options Sean Longstaff could choose at Leeds United

There’s always the chance that Longstaff decides to leave the past in the past and opt for a different shirt number.

There are plenty of options available to him under 30:

The No.8 will almost certainly appeal to an all-action midfielder like Longstaff, but he might have competition with another midfielder Leeds want to sign in Anton Stach.

Elsewhere, Longstaff wore No.15 during his highly successful season on loan at Blackpool in 2017-18, so he could return to that, while numbers 14, 16, 23 and 24 would all suit a player of his stature, too.
