Isaac Schmidt was confirmed as Leeds United’s eighth and final summer signing on deadline day as The Whites addressed a lack of cover at full-back with the addition of the Swiss defender.

Having already completed a deal for Japan star Ao Tanaka on deadline day, Leeds then went on to finish a transfer for 24-year-old Schmidt. He has signed a four-year deal at Leeds, and will wear the no.33 shirt.

Leeds needed a full-back given the injury-prone Sam Byram was the only recognised cover for Junior Firpo and Jayden Bogle. Schmidt is a left-footed right-back but obviously, able to play on the left flank.

With EFL clubs required to register players before midday on the day before a game, Tanaka was able to play but Schmidt had to watch on from the Elland Road stands as Leeds ran out 2-0 winners over Hull.

An attacking full-back, Schmidt had a hand in 17 goals in 108 games for Swiss side St. Gallen during his three-year stint in the Swiss Premier League. He scored in his final St. Gallen outing on Thursday night.

Costing Leeds an initial £2.5m, Schmidt’s move could see his fee rise to £4.6m. He took to Instagram on Sunday evening after a whirlwind 48 hours, telling fans he hopes he can be a missing puzzle piece.

He said: “I’m happy and excited to be part of the Leeds United family. I can’t wait to see you and add my best puzzle piece to this club, in order to achieve our goals.”

Schmidt recalls being sent off thanks to Wilfried Gnonto

It is not the first time Leeds have raided a Swiss side in the last couple of seasons, having lured Gnonto to Elland Road from FC Zurich. A player Schmidt actually played against during his three years at St. Gallen.

In his first interview as a Leeds player, Schmidt recalled receiving one of his two red cards at St. Gallen because of Gnonto describing the Italian as “too fast” and saying that it is better to be on Gnonto’s team.

“I’ve played against him when he was at Zurich. I am happy to be in the same team as him now, because he was really good. Too fast, I got a red card because of him. It’s better as teammates,” he told LUTV.
