Pascal Struijk fate sealed as Leeds United actively pursue deal for defender

The writing appears to be on the wall for Pascal Struijk, as Leeds United send a clear message about the Dutch defender.

Leeds United are busy reshaping their defensive options, among other things, this summer, with ambitious moves for Ousmane Diomande at Sporting CP dominating the headlines.

However, the emergence of a separate pursuit for a Union Berlin centre-back – it’s not Danilho Doekhi – suggests the club’s defensive recruitment is operating on multiple fronts simultaneously, and Struijk’s position is the casualty.

Struijk has been a reliable if unspectacular presence in Daniel Farke‘s backline, but with his contract expiring next summer and a feeling growing in LS11 that now is the right time to part ways, his days at the club appear numbered.

A new signing would effectively render that conversation moot, and Leeds United are pushing hard to make it happen.

On a scale of 1-10, how good would Diomande be? 🧱

Diogo Leite pursuit seals Struijk fate

According to transfer journalist Rudy Galetti, Leeds United are competing with Besiktas and a PIF-backed Saudi club for the signature of Diogo Leite.

All parties are actively exploring a move for the Portuguese defender, who is available on a free transfer, as competition for his transfer intensifies.

The profile comparison between Leite and Struijk is striking and deliberate. Both are left-footed, left-sided centre-backs capable of operating at left-back when required.

Leite is 27, Struijk turns 27 in August – virtually identical in age and positional remit.

For Leeds United to actively pursue a player who mirrors Struijk so closely signals one thing above all else – they are planning for a future without the former Ajax talent, and they want his replacement secured before any departure is confirmed.

What it means for Leeds United and Struijk

Unlike the Diomande pursuit, which would represent the most expensive signing in the Whites’ history, Leite is likely to be a separate addition.

It is worth noting that Farke’s side were also linked with Leite’s Union Berlin comrade Doekhi, though Beren Cross of The Athletic has since denied that interest.

As for Struijk, he has served the Elland Road club with distinction, but football moves fast.

After eight years of great service, the centre-back is expected to depart this summer.
