Leeds United defender Max Wober is being linked with a January exit as his old club Red Bull Salzburg consider a move – but now, Wober’s stance on leaving Elland Road has been reported.
Wober of course, was one of eight players that left Leeds on loan in the summer of 2023 thanks to Victor Orta’s relegation clause. Four have since left permanently, while Wober and Brenden Aaronson are back.
Robin Koch, Luis Sinisterra, Marc Roca and Diego Llorente are no longer on Leeds’ books, while Rasmus Kristensen and Jack Harrison have gone on loan again. Injuries have prevented Wober from playing much.
A knee operation and a hamstring injury have kept Wober sidelined but now, he is back in the Leeds side playing on the left of the defence with Junior Firpo out for the next 4-6 weeks, due to a hamstring injury.
Max Wober stance shared as Red Bull Salzburg eye January deal
Salzburg are keen on bringing Wober back to Austria, with the defender’s long-term future still a doubt. He only remained as Gladbach could not afford to buy Wober permanently, back in the summer window.
But now, Wober is back in the Leeds team and with Salzburg failing to provide a title race under manager Pep Ljinders, journalist Peter Linden has reported Wober’s stance on his website in a new update.
He says Wober prefers to fight for promotion with Leeds, over Salzburg’s fight for the title. Indeed, Wober knows promotion will mean a more ‘lucrative’ contract while Linden also reports on the Red Bull link.
According to Linden, he says that despite Salzburg being under the stewardship of Red Bull, the company will not force Leeds to reduce their asking price to hand Salzburg a bargain. Wober then, looks set to stay.
Max Wober’s importance at Leeds United is now growing
With Firpo sidelined and Joe Rodon constantly getting himself knocked about in the Championship and for Wales, Wober is an important asset at Leeds. A centre-back on a par with Rodon and Pascal Struijk.
If anything, his ability to play as a left-back as well as centre-back makes him even more valuable to The Whites. Sam Byram is expected to cover at right-back again if Jayden Bogle is missing on Saturday.
So, after making his first league start since May 2023 for Leeds in the 3-1 win over Middlesbrough, Wober is set to start again on the left of defence when The Whites go to Preston on the weekend.
