Leeds United’s interest, if indeed it exits, might just have come at the right time for a footballer who appears overdue a move.
And while there would be no deadline day swoop for Eduard Spertsyan, or any of Leeds United’s reported winter targets for that matter, this feels like a transfer ripe to be revisited provided Premier League football returns to Elland Road for 2025/26.
The Krasnodar talisman is reportedly valued at around £17 million. Too much, realistically, for a club operating on a Championship budget. But not one blessed with the considerable riches promotion brings.
And while Leeds sources played down a move for Eduard Spertsyan before Monday’s 11pm deadline, Daniel Farke has made it clear that a new number ten is something he would welcome with open arms.

Andrei Kanchelskis explains why Eduard Spertsyan needs Leeds United move
The Russia-born Armenia international is not just a number ten though. To quote former Krasnodar coach Nikola Elich, Spertsyan is ‘one of the best midfielders in Europe’.
Or, at least, he was a year or so ago. Spertsyan won Russia’s Midfielder of the Year award after providing 14 goals and assists apiece during the 2022/23 season. That tally dropped to 11 goals and seven assists the year after.
This season, Spertsyan has registered just six goals and three assists from 25 matches.
And the consensus amongst most Eastern European pundits is that a now-24-year-old Spertsyan must move and move soon, with a move to a more competitive, high-quality league to key to unleashing his as-yet largely untapped promise.
“I think that, with Spertsyan’s skills and mastery, he can play in England,” former Manchester United winger Andrei Kanchelskis tells the Russian press. “If there is interest from Leeds, then why not?
“The team is looking to the future, aiming to enter the Premier League. A club with a name, with traditions.
“Spertsyan needs to use this chance because we need to face the truth. Every year, he performs more and more quietly. [In England], he will progress.
“Here he had a bright first and second season, and then it became quieter,” adds the two-time Premier League champion, attributing the dip in quality of Russian football to their omission from the Champions League following the Ukraine invasion.
“Our championship without the Champions League is getting worse and worse.”
Former Arsenal and Barcelona star also talks up Elland Road switch
Spertsyan caught the eye of Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund and Juventus in the recent past but seemingly no longer.
As his output dwindles, this could present an opportunity for Leeds. An opportunity to bring in a playmaker who was once in the crosshairs of Europe’s most elite clubs and offer Spertsyan the chance to rediscover the form that earned PSG’s admiration in the first place.
Ex-Arsenal and Barcelona schemer Alex Hleb talks up a move to Leeds for Eduard Spertsyan too, pointing out that this is a player Daniel Farke knows from his admittedly brief spell in charge of Krasnodar.
“I think it’s a good option,” Hleb said this week. “Leeds are currently in first place in the Championship, they’re aiming to get into the Premier League and have every opportunity to do so.
“It’s clear that, if you compare them with Borussia or Juventus, then this is a worse option. But if there’s a specific offer, interest, everything suits him financially and in other respects, and the coach wants to see him in the starting line-up, then it’s a good option.
“Daniel Farke is the former head coach of Krasnodar? Then it’s perfect!,” the former La Liga winner adds. “For any footballer, the most important reason for a transfer is the coach’s faith.
“Game practice, trust, self-confidence, this is worth a lot. Of course, if I were Spertsyan, I would consider the option with Leeds. Especially if there are no offers from top clubs.”
