Leeds are focused on signing a new striker in the winter transfer window after switching to a 3-5-2 formation.
Where Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha used to jostle for one spot, the pair now play together when fit after Daniel Farke moved to a two-man strike pairing, meaning there is one less backup option on the bench in the striker department.
Leeds are looking at Porto forward Danny Namaso in a potential £4m bargain – while talks are ongoing over a deal for Ruben Vargas of Sevilla.
Tutto Mercato Web in Italy believe Leeds also like Taty Castellanos – who is a very exciting target for numerous reasons.
Leeds United told Taty Castellanos can be the new Didier Drogba
Leeds have wanted the Argentina international before, while Marcelo Bielsa was at the helm and the striker himself was playing for New York City FC.
Which striker would you like at Leeds the most? 🤑
As Leeds and others were linked to Castellanos, Major League Soccer expert Henry Hewitt spoke to the Manchester Evening News about the South American, boldly likening him to Didier Drogba.
Back in December 2021, he said: “He actually reminds me a lot of Didier Drogba, he’s very confident to the point where it could be seen as arrogance but has more than shown his quality this season.
“He doesn’t just score one type of goal. He’s strong, quick, good with his head and isn’t afraid to bring his teammates into play. Sometimes players who are as confident as Castellanos are reluctant to share the ball about, but with his assists this season, he’s given up goalscoring opportunities for himself to pass to someone else in a better position.”
Castellanos scored 17 goals and provided six assists across just 25 appearances in that 2021/22 campaign, so the excitement was justified.
Taty Castellanos lays claim to unique La Liga record Lionel Messi never managed
Incredibly, the 27-year-old became the first player this century to score four goals in a single game against Real Madrid in La Liga.
Which player would you be happy for Leeds to sell in January to fund their transfer business? Let us know in the comments… 🤔💰
The likes of Joel Piroe and Willy Gnonto are struggling to force their way into Farke's plans.
Castellanos netted four goals against Los Blancos in April 2023 to fire Girona to a 4-2 victory over the Spanish giants, a feat not even Lionel Messi managed over Real Madrid.
Alexander Sorloth then emulated the Argentine in a 4-4 draw between Villarreal and Real Madrid in May 2024.
Castellanos and the Norwegian – along with Robert Lewandowski in the UEFA Champions League for Borussia Dortmund – are the only players this century to score four times in one match against Real Madrid.
Therefore, if Leeds can get this deal over the line, supporters would have every right to be seriously excited.
