Leeds United are prepared to battle Manchester United for the signing of a £20million-rated midfielder this summer.

The Whites have had a positive start to the summer, tying captain and key midfielder Ethan Ampadu down to a long-term deal.

On paper, Leeds United are stacked with options in the centre of the park, with Anton Stach, Ilia Gruev, Ao Tanaka, Sean Longstaff and Charlie Crew also in the ranks.

However, Tanaka is among those who face an uncertain future in LS11, and the West Yorkshire club are therefore looking for further reinforcements in the position.

Leeds United weigh up bid for Shea Charles

According to the Daily Mail, Leeds United are weighing up a bid for Southampton ace Shea Charles.

The Saints are under some pressure to sell the 22-year-old as his contract expires next year, and rate him at £20m.

It remains to be seen if Daniel Farke‘s side are prepared to meet Southampton’s valuation of the Northern Ireland international.

Leeds face competition to acquire Charles’ signature, with Manchester United also placing the Manchester City academy graduate firmly on their radar.

Charles has also attracted interest from abroad after Southampton were disqualified from the promotion play-offs amid the spygate controversy.

Leeds United have considered other options, including Hidemasa Morita, but have turned their attention towards Charles.

Why Charles is an ideal fit for Leeds

Charles suits the profile of player Leeds United are looking to add to their ranks this summer.

At 22, the midfielder’s best years are ahead of him. Since he is also a homegrown player who came through the ranks at Manchester City, he represents a significant resale value.

He is also a defensively minded player who will fit right in with Farke’s system.

It now remains to be seen if the Elland Road outfit can go and get the deal across the line, beating the likes of Manchester United to his signature.

Paraag Marathe is expected to approve at least a few signings this summer, with Leeds prepared to break the bank to sign Ousmane Diomande from Sporting CP.
