Leeds United blow as £7m player set to remain at current club in January window despite Mateusz Klich saying move would be ‘great’

Leeds United have been touted with the possible signing of an MLS midfielder in the January window but an update on the player’s future suggests he isn’t going anywhere.

The Whites are likely to still continue to scour the market for new additions in the January window despite the signing of Josuha Guilavogui. With Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev injured, Leeds remain midfield thin.

Guilavogui’s addition does allow Leeds to give the likes of Joe Rothwell and Ao Tanaka a rest, with Daniel Farke resting Rothwell for the last 15 minutes during Saturday’s 3-0 win over Plymouth at Elland Road.

One player that Leeds have been linked with, time and time again, is Lewis O’Brien. The club’s initial eye on the midfielder came when he starred under Carlos Corberan as Huddersfield reached the play-off final.

Leeds keeping an eye on Lewis O’Brien but he looks set to stay

That interest looks to have reignited since the arrival of Daniel Farke. Leeds were touted as making a move to sign O’Brien last summer. He has since gone to MLS side LAFC on loan from Nottingham Forest.

The Sun’s Alan Nixon claims LAFC have a fixed price of £7m to sign O’Brien when his loan ends at the end of the MLS campaign. An LAFC side that includes former Leeds man Mateusz Bogusz and Olivier Giroud.

Nixon also says Leeds and Hull City had been monitoring the midfielder with January in mind. But, that O’Brien is happy in Los Angeles and is intent on staying put with the American side at the current time.

Mateusz Klich once said Lewis O’Brien to Leeds would be “great”

Klich obviously remains a Leeds legend but for the past two years, the experienced Pole has also been playing in the MLS with DC United alongside Christian Benteke. He has come up against LAFC’s O’Brien.

Asked if a move to Leeds would be a good one for O’Brien back in 2023, Klich responded by saying it would be a “great move” if O’Brien was to join Leeds. But perhaps, only for slightly selfish purposes.

Hilariously, he is still looking to rent out his flat in Harrogate and Klich said O’Brien could move into his property. Whether his flat, or a move to Leeds, remains a possibility is unclear but O’Brien is set to stay.
