International defender wants to join Leeds United with Daniel Farke pushing to sign him on loan

Leeds United’s hopes of completing a real late beat-the-deadline coup have been handed a major boost.

The Whites are on the lookout for as many as three more potential signings ahead of Friday’s 11pm deadline and full-back is one of the positions that needs strengthening.

Daniel Farke currently has only Jayden Bogle, Junior Firpo and Sam Byram as first-team options at his disposal, all of whom have had injury problems during their careers.

Bogle and Firpo are very much first choice right now but in a long 46-game season, they are bound to need rotating at some point.

As such, Leeds are keen to bring in an extra body in that department and they may have just been given the green light to sign an international defender.

Owen Wijndal stance on a move to Leeds

Max Aarons and Owen Wijndal are the two names which have been most heavily linked with joining Leeds at full-back.

However, with Byram and Bogle both right-footed, it would certainly make more sense if Leeds pursued a deal for Wijndal, as he would provide natural cover to Firpo.

And according to Transferwatch.NL, Leeds have been handed a major boost in their pursuit of Wijndal as he is keen on a move to Elland Road.

Despite interest from Galatasaray and Rayo Vallecano, Wijndal has ‘expressed a clear preference’ for a move to England, with Leeds the side showing the most interest.

Ajax would prefer to sell Wijndal permanently but are also open to loan offers that include a purchase option at the end of the season.

Ajax are now hoping for a quick resolution on his future and so hopefully Leeds can move to get this over the line.

Wijndal would be a huge coup for Leeds

This would be a real coup for Leeds considering Wijndal has already been capped on 11 occasions at senior level by Netherlands.

With Firpo’s long-term future after this season uncertain due to the expiration of his contract, Wijndal is exactly the sort of player Leeds should be looking to bring in.

At 24, he has the potential to continue developing into a top left-back, having kind of lost his way at Ajax since joining from AZ Alkmaar in 2022.

However, his assist record at Alkmaar (27 in 143 matches) absolutely speaks for itself and to hear he would be willing to drop into the Championship shows the pulling power Leeds have.
