How Cameron Archer feels about joining Leeds United this summer as promotion edges closer

Leeds United took another huge step towards the Premier League on Monday night, coming from behind to beat Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.

For Leeds United fans, the last two games in particular will live long in the memory of this season, with Daniel Farke’s side having come from behind twice to beat two of their promotion rivals in Sunderland and Sheffield United.

On Monday night, Leeds United scored three in the final 20 minutes of the game at Bramall Lane to beat Sheffield United 3-1 in the end, with the win taking them five points clear at the top of the Championship table.

It’s now 15 games unbeaten in the Championship for Farke’s side who continue to push for the title, let alone promotion, now with 12 games standing between them and the Premier League.

Whilst promotion is still no guarantee, Leeds are looking good, and they’d be forgiven for placing some focus on the summer transfer window and who they could potentially sign to bolster their ranks ahead of what would surely be a fight to stay in the top flight.

Cameron Archer to Leeds United latest, Southampton star still open to Elland Road switch

Cameron Archer, who joined Southampton in a £15million deal last summer, is one who’ll come into the conversation once again. Leeds have tried to sign Archer on multiple occasions now, most recently launching a bid on deadline day earlier in February but failing to land the 23-year-old attacker.

Southampton were reluctant to sell Archer at the time. But journalist Ben Jacobs states that Southampton’s likely relegation and Leeds’ likely promotion could see the former Aston Villa man trade places in the summer, and remain a Premier League player with Leeds.

Speaking to GIVEMSPORT and sharing the latest on the whole situation, Jacobs said: “Cameron Archer was Leeds’ number one target as far as the striker was concerned, and it was no failing on the part of Leeds.

“It was just down to the fact that Southampton were reluctant to sell, and Leeds tried until the end, but Southampton’s position didn’t change.

“So my expectation is, with Southampton likely to go down and Leeds on track to come up, that Leeds will revisit the Cameron Archer deal, and over the course of a long summer, potentially make more progress there.

“Archer is keen on the move. Leeds value the fact that he can play centrally or out wide. And Archer will remain on Leeds’ shortlist heading into the summer.”

Even with Southampton still a Premier League side, it was revealed in the January transfer window that Archer was open to leaving Southampton for Leeds United, which might highlight just how bad the situation is at St Mary’s.

But Saints boss Ivan Juric revealed how Archer reacted to the Leeds United links, stating that the Englishman remained professional throughout.

Juric said earlier in January: “Cam is top, he’s working hard. He was a big professional the last week whether he was fighting to stay or go. He’s always training hard. I want to change a little bit of his movements and I think he can improve a lot. This week he did really well with us.”

So far this season, Archer has scored just two goals in 23 Premier League appearances for the Saints who remain rooted to the foot of the Premier League table, with just nine points to their name.
