How a World Cup twist has suddenly put Leeds United keeper Lucas Perri in the shop window

The transfer market operates on chaos theory, and a completely unrelated goalkeeper transforming miracles across the Atlantic has just put a Leeds United star in the shop window.

When Leeds United agreed a premium £15.6million deal to secure the services of Brazilian giant Lucas Perri from Lyon last summer, the expectation was that the 6ft 6in shot-stopper would anchor Daniel Farke‘s defensive line for the foreseeable future.

Fast forward 12 months, and an incredible 2026 FIFA World Cup domino effect has suddenly put the 28-year-old right in the shop window for an unexpected move to Serie A.

According to Italian transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio, Torino have added Perri to their goalkeeping shortlist. It is a development that may catch Elland Road off guard, and we have a former Leeds target to thank for it.

Agree or disagree – Lucas Perri was a waste of money at £15.6m 😤

Orlando Gill sparks domino effect

To understand why Torino sporting director Gianluca Petrachi is suddenly sniffing around West Yorkshire, you have to look at the global stage.

Torino’s priority signing to bolster their goalkeeping department this summer was Orlando Gill, the outstanding Paraguayan shot-stopper of San Lorenzo.

Before the World Cup kicked off, the deal was relatively straightforward, with a modest £5.1m evaluation expected to seal the transfer.

Then, the tournament happened. Gill turned in a series of heroic, world-class performances to guide Paraguay into a blockbuster round of 16 match against France.

Realising they are holding a global asset, San Lorenzo immediately ripped up the negotiation script, spiked their asking price into the stratosphere, and refused to talk to Torino until Paraguay are eliminated, as per Sky Italia.

While Paraguay have since been knocked out by France, a panicked Torino appear to have pivoted to other options amid fears of being priced out of a move for the former Leeds United target.

They opened their emergency contingency folder, and Perri’s name was right at the top alongside Southampton’s Aaron Ramsdale.

Leeds United must not yield to Torino lowball offer

While a transfer interest out of nowhere can cause anxiety, this sudden spotlight might be exactly what Leeds United need to resolve an existing squad dilemma.

Perri’s maiden campaign in England did not follow the script, as he lost his starting spot under Farke to Karl Darlow following an arm injury and an uncomfortable adjustment period.

He made just three Premier League appearances in the calendar year of 2026, watching from the bench as a revived Darlow marshalled the back four.

With Leeds United actively pursuing a deal for Parma and Japan star Zion Suzuki, Perri’s long-term future was already a massive question mark.

A goalkeeper of his physical prime and profile cannot sit on the bench forever, but shifting a £15.6m signing without taking a catastrophic financial loss is usually an impossible task.

Torino entering the frame changes everything. The Elland Road outfit find themselves holding all the cards, as Perri is locked into a long-term contract until 2029.

This means Paraag Marathe and Co. are under zero pressure to accept a cheap, lowball Italian loan-to-buy offer.

If Torino’s primary World Cup plans remain entirely blocked by Paraguay’s success, Leeds United can demand a premium, permanent fee to fully recoup their original investment.
