Graham Smyth has latest update on Wilfried Gnonto’s future at Leeds before deadline day

Leeds United’s current focus is on trying to bring new players in and it looks as if The Whites might be set to secure two new signings on Thursday, ahead of Friday’s deadline.

If flight tracker is to be believed, Fortuna Dusseldorf star Ao Tanaka has just jetted in to undergo a Leeds medical and sign on the dotted line. A move for Tanaka is worth just £3.4m, a contract until June 2028.

Tanaka arrives as the third of a mini-window Leeds have embarked on since the sale of Georginio Rutter. Largie Ramazani has come onboard for a fee of £10m, while Manor Solomon has joined from Tottenham.

Now, Tanaka fills the void in midfield with the Japan star admired by Daniel Farke. A new full-back is next, and it looks set to be St. Gallen’s left-back Isaac Schmidt for a bargain fee little over the £1m mark.

Smyth delivers update on Leeds’ hopes of keeping Gnonto

But in terms of the current Leeds players, Wilfried Gnonto is likely to be the one that Leeds fans are most-worried about a sale in the next 36 hours. The Italy star of course tried to force himself out last summer.

This summer, he has attracted interest. Serie A trio Genoa, Parma and Spezia have all been linked with Gnonto, but the “unbelievable” star has remained until now and the YEP’s Graham Smyth has an update.

Smyth says he is staying, currently: “And it’s still all quiet on the Willy front as things stand. Ideally it’ll stay that way. Keeping him feels really important. Could well see someone trying it on with a late bid.”

Gnonto might be staying, but another could leave Leeds

Indeed, as reports claim from Germany that Gladbach could still make a late move to lure Max Wober back to the Bundesliga. Gladbach are expecting to sell French midfielder Manu Kone for a fee of £18m.

If that does happen, then they could use that cash to reinvest in a deal for Wober. It is believed that Leeds want a fee of £12.5m for Austria international Wober, if the club are to allow the left-footer to depart.

It might be though, that Leeds will want a replacement for Wober in the coming hours before allowing him to go. One to keep an eye on as we edge closer towards the deadline on Friday at 11pm.
