Graham Smyth expected Leeds United to sell three players this summer, including Daniel Farke favourite

Leeds United signed 10 players in the summer and let go of 12 in the process, but some surprise players remained past Monday’s transfer deadline.

Promotion to the Premier League for Leeds United and others means a cutthroat approach in many ways, given that players from the Championship are often not capable of the step up in quality.

Even if getting wages like Max Wober’s off the books helped Leeds’ PSR situation, it simply wasn’t enough. Paraag Marathe confirmed the need for Leeds sales earlier in the summer, but only two players were sold.

Rasmus Kristensen and Sam Greenwood were the only players sold to create any kind of PSR headroom, but Leeds were restricted financially via PSR more so than either Sunderland or Burnley.

Leeds were tipped to be one of the busiest sides in the market but both outspent the Whites after selling James Trafford, Jobe Bellingham, and Tommy Watson for more financial wiggle room.

Graham Smyth shares his view of Leeds’ PSR problems amid Ilia Gruev sale verdict

Our finance expert Adam Williams expected a bigger summer spending spree from Leeds than what transpired. Since then, Graham Smyth has detailed his thoughts on the situation following no signings on deadline day

Speaking via The Inside Elland Road podcast, Smyth explained his surprise at favourites like Ilia Gruev remaining at the club, among others.

He said: “Ultimately, Companies House will shed all the light on that that we need to see. You know, Companies House is going to show us what they spent and the profit and loss column.

“And we can work it out what their PSR position was. You know, by and large, they spent 100 million. I went into the summer thinking they might spend a bit more, but I thought they would sell.

“I thought we’d see the departure of a Gruev or maybe even [Joel] Piroe. I certainly thought [Illan] Meslier would go.

“The club’s defence, I suppose, to not selling some players will be that fans and people like me, the players that we want them to sell are the players that would probably be hardest to sell.

“You know, you look at Meslier, you think, is a club going to give him the wage that he’s on at Leeds? Given what’s happened over the last two, three seasons, given what happened last season?

“He’s no longer number one at a Championship club, nevermind a Premier League club. He’s been replaced by Karl Darlow. He’s then found himself third in the pecking order, and it’s quite clear there’s no place for him in the league squad.

“So, that’s a big red flag, you know, for a buying club. I’m not really surprised that they find it difficult to shift him. [Patrick] Bamford they paid off. [Mateo] Joseph, they didn’t want to sell, they only wanted to loan out.

“[Largie] Ramazani, they didn’t want to sell, they only wanted to loan out. So, they didn’t really make a lot of money, did they? I mean, somehow getting a fee of what 4 million euros was it? For Sam Greenwood to a Polish club?

“You know, fair play. That’s some wizardry. But there wasn’t a lot else coming in. And I don’t know that it’s such a big boast to say, ‘Well, we kept all our key players.’

“I understand that they’re saying the most saleable players and the players who would bring the most PSR joy are those that nobody really wants to sell. The club would say nobody would be happy if we sold those players.”

Two solutions for the 49ers to fix Leeds’ PSR situation

The 49ers Rangers takeover could complicate the financial situation but one of the primary ways in which Leeds can have a leg up in the future is via various revenue streams.

Kieran Maguire expects higher ticket prices for Leeds imminently, with the 49ers having done so in the USA already. That will make the fans lose out at the cost of matchday going up.

However, it could also bring about long-term success if done right. But Smyth is also correct to point out that Leeds had other avenues to explore regarding selling players.

All summer long, Pascal Struijk and Willy Gnonto have been earmarked as PSR sales potentially. They ended up remaining, as did Gruev and Piroe, alongside Meslier.
