The goalkeeper department at Leeds United is set to change this summer with Illan Meslier’s future at Elland Road likely to come to an end, and a new stopper will be brought in.
Daniel Farke is considering Meslier’s future at Leeds with the Frenchman a target for both Stade Rennais and Leicester City. Liam Rosenior is also considering a move for Meslier at Strasbourg come the summer.
Meslier is about to enter the final 12 months of his contract and has been replaced by Karl Darlow, who has starred in his four games. The Wales no.1 has conceded just two goals, keeping two clean sheets.
The 49ers want six new signings this summer if promoted, with a new goalkeeper high on the agenda at Leeds. Now, a goalkeeper currently shining in Belgium has said Leeds tried to sign him back in 2023.
Senne Lammens says he held ‘good’ talks with Leeds United
Back in the summer of 2023, 22-year-old goalkeeper Senne Lammens was looking for a new club with his contract at Club Brugge expiring. Lammens had only managed four senior appearances for Club Brugge.
Leeds and Everton were interested in Lammens, which was reported at the time. But, Lammens chose to join Belgian giants Royal Antwerp and has since played 53 times, 37 appearances coming during 24-25.
Speaking to Belgian newspaper Nieuwsblad, Lammens says he had “good contact” with Leeds before he chose to join Antwerp. It is unclear if the talks were held before Leeds were relegated, or after the drop.
“When I chose Antwerp, there were offers from English clubs. Not immediately as a first keeper, but with an interesting long-term plan. Was good contact with Leeds. Those teams will continue to follow you.
“So who knows, one day… The Premier League is still the best competition. But the move to Antwerp was the best anyway. Going abroad alone, without family, without a girlfriend, that was probably too early.”
Senne Lammens form should see Leeds United reignite interest
The Belgium U21 international has impressed with Antwerp. Indeed, he has clocked up nine caps with Belgium’s U21 side and in the most-recent international break, Lammens was called up by Belgium.
Lammens didn’t win a senior cap but at 22, there is real potential in Lammens. He was left on the bench against Ukraine in two games, as Belgium edged past Ukraine in their Nations League play-off games.
If Leeds are looking for a young goalkeeper to replace Meslier, then they simply have to reignite interest in Lammens given his form for Antwerp and the fact he has been recognised by Belgium’s National side.
