The optics of leaving behind a £32m transfer surely provided cause for concern at Leeds during the summer.
Leeds bid £32m for Rodrigo Muniz back in June as the 49ers deemed the Brazilian capable of helping Daniel Farke achieve Premier League survival.
After Fulham surprisingly rejected the offer, the backup option was a considerably cheaper move for Dominic Calvert-Lewin on a free transfer.
To many Leeds fans, it probably looked as if the 49ers had settled for less and gave up on making a marquee striker signing.
However, it is now starting to look like Leeds managed to avoid an expensive mistake.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin is embarrassing Rodrigo Muniz this season as Leeds United No.9 races clear of the Brazilian
As we approach New Year’s Day, the Fulham No.9 can only lay claim to one Premier League goal this season in seven games.
Who do you want Leeds to sign in January? A striker surely has to be the priority!
Calvert-Lewin netted double that tally in his last appearance alone when bagging twice in the 4-1 win over Crystal Palace, and can boast seven goals in 15 Premier League appearances overall this season.
It strongly suggests Leeds dodged a bullet in the South American, who has also struggled badly with injury problems in this current campaign.
Ironically, Calvert-Lewin was the one many feared would struggle to stay fit given his colourful injury history, but the England international has impressively managed to avoid missing a single game since making his debut for Leeds back in August.
Leeds United fans have been proven right about Rodrigo Muniz
Understandably, Leeds fans were unsure about spending £32m on Muniz back in the summer.
Supporters described the price tag as “insane” and asked the 49ers what they were thinking as the offer went in – one fan even claimed the Fulham marksman wasn’t even worth £15m.
Answer this: Leeds United will finish in ___th place if Dominic Calvert-Lewin stays fit 📊
Six goals in five for the big man!
It was a justified response, seeing as Muniz only scored eight goals in 31 Premier League appearances last term, only one more than Calvert-Lewin has netted in 15 games this term.
Fortunately, the 49ers didn’t waste any further time on trying to sign the South American, and fortunately, all has worked out well on the striker front – even Lukas Nmecha has four times as many goals as the struggling Fulham frontman.
Hopefully, both the German and Calvert-Lewin can keep delivering for Leeds.
