One of Leeds United’s least successful signings of the summer transfer window could be set for a premature exit from Elland Road in January.

Several of Leeds United’s summer signings have come to the fore in recent weeks, as Daniel Farke has transformed his side’s Premier League form.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has scored six goals in his last five appearances to fire Leeds away from immediate relegation danger in the top flight.

He has starred alongside Anton Stach and Jaka Bijol, both of whom have come to the fore since Farke switched to a 3-5-2.

However, Sebastiaan Bornauw has struggled to make a similar impact during his time at Elland Road. Now, it appears that he could be offered a surprise exit route in the January transfer window.

FC Koln Vice President speaks amid Sebastiaan Bornauw reports

Reports in recent days have suggested that FC Koln are interested in bringing Bornauw back to the club, having spent two years there between 2019 and 2021.

Bornauw has found playing time hard to come by since joining Leeds, having played just two minutes in the Premier League this season.

Now, speaking to Express.de, FC Koln Vice President Jorg Alvermann admitted that Koln are in the market to strengthen in the January transfer window.

Alvermann said: “This winter break is special because it is so short. The goal is, of course, to sign players who can join the team for training camp, if possible.

“Therefore, it is desirable to start working on this relatively soon.” Asked about the club’s financial position, he added: “We are able to act!”

The report goes on to add that Bornauw is one option under serious consideration, alongside Frankfurt’s Aurele Amenda and Hoffenheim’s Kevin Akpoguma.

Leeds United will need to buy before they sell Sebastiaan Bornauw

Although Bornauw has found his opportunities limited at Elland Road this season, this does not mean Farke will automatically be willing to let him leave the club.

After Leeds’ narrow defeat against Manchester City, which saw Farke finally switch to a three-man central defence, the Leeds boss stated that Bornauw’s fitness held the key to his side sticking with this tactic for the long term.

The likes of Joel Piroe and Willy Gnonto are struggling to force their way into Farke's plans.

Speaking via the Yorkshire Evening Post, Farke said: “It’s not that often when a centre-back has to be substituted, they cover the lowest distance. But for the head, it’s exhausting.

“If you play three, you have to shift a bit more, and there’s a bit more danger that you have to substitute someone. Without an expert on the bench, it’s a bit tricky. It’s beneficial to have one centre-back there.”

As a result, Bornauw’s exit is unlikely to be sanctioned without another defender coming in. However, with Leeds linked to El Chadaille Bitshiabu in recent days, Bornauw may still be offered an exit route.
