Beren Cross names the four signings he can see Leeds United making before the deadline

Leeds United still have plenty of signings to make in the coming weeks, despite making seven additions to their first-team squad so far.

Lucas Perri, a Brazilian goalkeeper from Lyon, became the seventh signing of Leeds United’s summer last weekend, but they have failed to sign other players since then for Daniel Farke’s new-look side.

While Leeds’ next steps after missing out on Igor Paixao have already been explained, that will not stop them from looking at the ambitious ‘reach’ signings Graham Smyth has detailed.

Around the time of the arrivals of Gabriel Gudmundsson and Sean Longstaff, we exclusively revealed that Leeds were interested in at least six more signings to finish off their Premier League team.

Perri and Anton Stach have filled two of those, meaning there should be four remaining. But is that the perception of all of the journalists covering Leeds? Beren Cross has since provided his verdict.

Beren Cross explains the four areas Leeds United still need to make signings in

Speaking via The Square Ball, Cross of The Athletic has explained the latest on transfers and what he thinks the squad still needs.

“So, those sort of talks we had all also sort of reflected on the striker search that’s not going away. They’re very aware that is that’s a big priority now.

“I think now that, as August the first approaches, they’re aware that window is now shrinking ultimately with the clubs they’re talking with. We know they like [Rodrigo] Muniz at Fulham.

“Those talks now need to start going somewhere as August approaches. You know Everton is, like you say, less than three weeks away or two-and-a-half weeks away.

“[Isaac] Schmidt, understandably, is looking for minutes elsewhere for the World Cup. I don’t think any of us would be bridging that. I mean, clearly last season didn’t give him any reason to believe he’s suddenly going to play a lot under Farke.

“But again, Leeds will only let him go if they — and when they — get another full-back in. Which, you’d have thought as a backup option to to [Jayden] Bogle or Gudmundsson, depending what side you want to play, that shouldn’t be too hard to do.

“And then the other two are: you’ve got striker, full-back, and then you’re looking at a 10, and a winger.

“So, I think we are looking ideally there’s going to be four new signings and you’re hoping that three of them are going to be good starters.

“You would hope. Of course, any further incomings will be dependent on anybody else that goes that at the moment we don’t know about.”

His last sentence points towards potentially more than four players if there are any exits which then dictate a further incoming or two. However, it seems most in the media are aligned on what is left to do.

Leeds’ transfer spend so far and potential remaining budget

Earlier this month, it was reported that Leeds will now target attacking signings, specifically with a new No.10, a new striker, and a new winger on Farke’s wish list.

Going into this summer, some reports revealed that Leeds have a £150 million transfer budget for new players, as a rough estimate.

NameAgeHeightFromPrice
Lukas Nmecha266ft 1inVfL WolfsburgFree
Sebastiaan Bornauw266ft 3inVfL Wolfsburg£5.1m
Gabriel Gudmundsson265ft 11inLOSC Lille£10.3m
Jaka Bijol266ft 3inUdinese£15m
Sean Longstaff276ft 2inNewcastle United£15m
Lucas Perri276ft 5inOlympique Lyonnais£15.6m
Anton Stach266ft 4inHoffenheim£19.9m

If all add-ons are taken into account, then Leeds have spent just over £80 million on transfer fees. That should mean roughly £70 million can be spent.

However, PSR constraints likely mean sales are needed and very much necessary in order for them to go to that sort of figure. That may be Leeds’ next step following their next acquisition or two.
