Anderlecht touted to make bargain move for Leeds United outcast Illan Meslier

The January transfer window is already fast approaching and Leeds United are expected to be busy, if they can offload some of their unneeded players such as Illan Meslier.

Managing director Robbie Evans has said Leeds have reached the PSR border, and another signing would cross it. That opens up the possibilities of a points deduction, but Leeds need attacking reinforcements.

Reports say Leeds are looking to make signings in January, and while Leeds could avoid crossing the PSR line with a loan or two, selling a fringe player might aid Leeds’ chances of bolstering their final third.

The obvious sale Leeds will be keen to make is Illan Meslier, who finds himself out of contract at the end of the season. Now third choice, Meslier is no longer needed at Elland Road and a new club is keen.

Anderlecht eye a bargain deal for Illan Meslier in January

The pressure is on at Anderlecht, having won just two of their last 10 games. In that run, they’ve let in 10 goals and only kept three clean sheets. The Belgian side are expected to be on the lookout for a keeper.

Belgian outlet Voetbal Nieuws say Meslier has ‘appeared on the scene’ at Anderlecht and a January move could materialise. The report also states that the asking price could be ‘low’ given he’s no longer needed.

Leeds will be keen to rake in a fee for Meslier in January, rather than losing him for nothing at the end of the season. A new deal for Meslier seems incredibly unlikely unless Leeds look to protect their assets.

The other clubs linked with Illan Meslier in summer

When it was made clear that Meslier was third choice, after being left in Yorkshire for the friendly against Milan in Dublin, clubs were linked. PSG, Lille and Como are all understood to have looked at Meslier.

His reputation remains high in France, and former side Lorient held talks to land Meslier. Carlos Corberan was also touted to make a move on deadline day, but the goalkeeper ended up staying at Elland Road.

Since the transfer window, even Champions League finalists Inter Milan have been linked with Meslier, but a move is likely to see Meslier become the club’s no.2. January is fast approaching and interest remains.
