After Zion Suzuki snub, Leeds United now eye transfer swoop for another Parma star

Leeds United are on an intensive summer search for defensive reinforcements, and their hunt has now taken a fascinating and distinctly familiar turn back toward Serie A.

Elland Road chiefs have spent several weeks actively navigating a heavily congested market to secure a high-quality centre-back.

The Leeds United recruitment team’s initial foray into Italian territory ended in frustration when a high-profile move for Parma goalkeeper Zion Suzuki ultimately collapsed.

After being heavily linked with a move for the Japan FIFA World Cup star for days, the Whites have faced rejection in their pursuit of the shot-stopper amid an £18.75million bid.

However, rather than letting the breakdown sour relations, Leeds are ready to test the Italian side’s reserve yet again.

Leeds United in multi-club scramble for Mariano Troilo

According to Parma Live, Leeds United have set their sights on 2003-born Argentine defender Mariano Troilo.

Securing the highly-rated youngster will require a major financial commitment and total boardroom resolve, as he has become one of the most coveted young defensive assets in Italy.

Furthermore, Leeds are not the only club interested in Troilo, with Fulham said to have already submitted a £17m offer to take him to London.

Showing tremendous leverage, Parma flatly knocked the offer back, insisting that the player’s intrinsic development value sits significantly higher.

In the wake of that rejection, the market has exploded, with Leeds United joining a hyper-competitive four-club English race alongside Fulham, Brentford and Sunderland to secure his signature.

Solving Daniel Farke’s tactical headache

While missing out on Suzuki was a bitter pill to swallow, pivoting the budget toward Troilo could arguably fix a much more critical structural flaw in Daniel Farke‘s squad.

Leeds United have spent weeks trying to lock down a centre-back to bring elite tactical balance to the back four following Pascal Struijk’s move to Brighton & Hove Albion.

After eight years, Struijk is leaving Leeds.

The Elland Road outfit are hunting for a specialised left-footed defender, with Real Betis’ Natan and Juventus’ Lloyd Kelly among those linked with a move to West Yorkshire.

Although Troilo is not particularly left-footed, he is known to be ambidextrous and represents a remarkably high-ceiling investment.

At just 23 years old, the Argentina powerhouse possesses the raw recovery pace, progressive passing range, and physical aerial presence required to thrive under Farke’s high-pressing system.

If Leeds United can trigger a financial package that eclipses Fulham’s rejected millions, it would represent the ultimate statement of intent.

Missing out on Parma’s goalkeeper might have been a blessing in disguise if it clears the path to land their crown jewel in defence.
