Leeds United’s interest in Marseille midfielder Bilal Nadir confirms a clear shift toward free-agent value after reports suggesting they had agreed a deal for Sporting Lisbon’s Hidemasa Morita.

Leeds moving for Hidemasa Morita shows a clear focus on securing midfielders without paying transfer fees. Reports in Portugal say Leeds have an agreement in principle for the 40-time Japan international.

Their interest in Bilal Nadir places another player in the same market, where contract timing creates value. According to a report from Africa Foot, Leeds are one of three interested in landing the Marseille ace.

This is a defined approach, Leeds are targeting availability and upside rather than committing large transfer outlays. The 22-year-old is a player with huge potential and has shown that this season.

Bilal Nadir’s career path explains why he is available

Nadir came through Nice’s academy before joining Marseille, where he has progressed into the senior squad. His development stalled when he missed 248 days and 31 matches with a knee injury.

Speaking after recovering from his injury, Nadir said: “It was a difficult period. I had to stay focused and work hard every day to come back stronger.”

He returned gradually, explaining: “I took it step by step. I came back with the reserve team and then gradually with the first team.”

That timeline matters because he only began to establish himself after returning, when he scored his first professional goal against Le Havre and rejoined the rotation.

Nadir’s numbers show a squad option with upside

This season he has made 26 appearances, with one goal and five assists, which reflects involvement without a guaranteed starting place. Similar to Ilia Gruev at Leeds, who could find himself leaving soon.

In Ligue 1 he has played 19 matches and 557 minutes, underlining his role as a rotation midfielder. He has also featured in European competition, which adds experience beyond his domestic minutes.

At international level he is yet to earn a senior Morocco cap, despite being called into the senior squad. The profile is clear, he is not established, but he has already operated in a competitive environment.

Contract situation has created a competitive market

Nadir’s contract runs until June 2026, yet there is no agreement over a new deal, meaning he is available on a free transfer. That has opened the market, with Villarreal and Strasbourg also interested.

His demands are defined, including a €2.5m signing bonus and €1.2m salary, which positions him as a calculated free-agent investment. That equates to around £20,000 a week, and more than £2m up top.

Marseille’s stance reflects his role, he is useful but not central, which explains why the situation remains unresolved. Clearly, Marseille are not overly fussed if Nadir does leave in the coming months.

Leeds are identifying midfielders whose contracts and development stage reduce cost while preserving upside, and Nadir fits the same recruitment logic as Morita rather than standing as an isolated target.
