Leeds United claimed bragging rights over Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday after the Whites’ 3-0 win against the Owls on Sunday. Although it wasn’t an easy game for Daniel Farke’s side at times.
Leeds United welcomed Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday to Elland Road on Sunday, for midday kick off live on Sky Sports.
It’s a second Yorkshire derby in two games after Leeds beat Harrogate Town in the FA Cup last time out. And Daniel Farke’s side got off to a great start against the Owls.
Manor Solomon scored his fourth Championship goal of the season after just four minutes of the game, though the first half was much more evenly-contested. As was the second half.
Leeds had the bulk of possession and the most sights of goal, whilst Wednesday remained a threat on the counter-attack. But it Leeds nicked the win with a late goal from Largie Ramazani. Then right at the death, Ao Tanaka capped a strong afternoon with a neat flicked goal.
It’ll go down as a routine win for the Whites and it’s a three points that keeps them in 1st place of the Championship table.

Leeds United player ratings vs Sheffield Wednesday
Illan Meslier – 6/10
All eyes on the Frenchman going into this one. But he had barely anything to do, at least of note. A good game for him after all the talk around his recently.
Sam Byram – 7/10
A lot of Wednesday’s attacking player came down Byram’s left but he stood up to most of it well, with a couple of strong interventions in the first half and the second half too. A solid performance from him, even if he isn’t as good going forward.
Ethan Ampadu – 6/10
Also made a couple of key interventions in the first half as he helped Byram out on the left. Mostly solid in defence but he didn’t boast that commanding presence that he does most of the time.
Joe Rodon – 6.5/10
Passing practise for the Welshman at times against Sheffield Wednesday. Did make some good tackles in the game but he was mostly responsible for keeping play ticking along, with Wednesday’s attacks often shut down in midfield.
Jayden Bogle – 6.5/10
Looked a bit brighter in the first 45 against Wednesday than he has in some of his recent games. Had some good attacking play in the first half and played a role in Leeds’ second on the day. A decent outing for the right-back.
Ao Tanaka – 6.5/10
Tenacious from Ao Tanaka. Really got in the face of opposition players and made the midfield a difficult place to be. Didn’t seem as impactful in the second half but kept on battling and played his part in the win. Took his goal nicely at the death.
Joe Rothwell – 6/10
Some neat passes out wide early doors. But limited in his passing as Wednesday sat quite deep at times. Kept the ball moving about in the second half, albeit without doing anything spectacular, before being brought off after 70 minutes.
Manor Solomon – 7/10
Lively as ever. Really establishing himself as a key player with a well-taken goal early on, companied by some neat attacking play in the first half. Tracked back when he needed too and kept up the energy in the second half.

Brenden Aaronson – 6.5/10
Tidy in possession but his no.10 position looked a bit crowded at times. Made some good runs behind and a couple were picked out. Wasn’t an easy game for him but when he got on the ball, he tried to get forward, and was mostly decent.
Dan James – 7/10
Him and Solomon ran the show in the first half. Wednesday couldn’t handle his pace with James causing a lot of problems throughout. Wednesday limited the space given to James in the second half and so he didn’t get in behind as much. But a good game overall.
Joel Piroe – 5/10
Mostly anonymous apart from a couple of decent passes in the first half, when he dropped deep to receive the ball. Largely the same case in the second half before he was brought off.
Substitutes: Ilia Gruev (5.5/10), Mateo Joseph (5.5/10), Largie Ramazani (6.5/10)
