Leeds United player ratings in pre-season win vs Harrogate as Mateo Joseph outshines Joel Piroe in attack

Leeds United ran out comfortable 3-0 winners in their first pre-season friendly of the summer against Harrogate Town and here are our player ratings from the match.

Illan Meslier – 6

Barely had anything to do in terms of saving shots, but again looked a little rusty with his distribution, which needs to improve.

Ethan Ampadu – 7

Played on the right of a back three which allowed him to step forward into midfield. The role suited him well, but the sooner he is back in the middle, the better.

Joe Rodon – 6

A couple of loose passes early on but can be forgiven considering he had a later start to pre-season than everyone else, and it being the first game. Not much to do defensively.

James Debayo – 7

Almost got in a mix-up with Firpo early in the first half but settled in nicely and certainly didn’t look out of place.

Dan James – 7

Constantly getting forward putting crosses in down the right and that wing-back role seemed to suit him pretty well, thanks to his engine to get up and down. Could’ve been better when he got in those positions, though.

Ilia Gruev – 6

A nice and comfortable game for him in the middle, picking up the ball from deep and keeping it simple.

Georginio Rutter – 8

Weaker opposition granted, but looked back to his bright best. Dribbling past players, and creating openings with his vision and passing. Lovely finish for his goal, too.

Joe Rothwell – 7

Very busy in the middle and certainly backed up what many have said about what he could offer over the course of the season. Also took a couple of decent set-pieces.

Junior Firpo – 8

Reports he might leave but showed what an asset he could be, particularly as a wing-back in the new formation tried by Farke. Also got on the scoresheet.

Joel Piroe – 5

Pretty anonymous for much of the time he was on the pitch, outshone by his strike partner Mateo Joseph. Gave the ball away a few times, too.

Mateo Joseph – 9

Got the assist for Firpo’s opener and looked extremely bright throughout, linking up play and running the channels with his intelligent movement. Great performance.

Subs

Karl Darlow – 6

Like Meslier, a bit dodgy with his feet. Did not have much to do but did do well to deal with a long ball in behind on the hour mark that could easily have resulted in a goal.

Sam Byram – 6

Not much to do when he came onto the field after the break but his distribution down the flanks could have been a lot better.

Pascal Struijk – 7

Fantastic to see him back after so long on the sidelines and he will just be pleased to have blown a few cobwebs off. Should be ready to hit the ground running against Portsmouth.

Charlie Crew – 7

Being booked in a friendly shows he is not afraid to put himself about, but it was the crispness and quality of his passing that caught the eye today. A player Leeds are excited about.

Wilfried Gnonto – 6

Always looks better on the left-hand-side and linked up pretty well with Summerville throughout the second half. Not much end product, though.

Crysencio Summerville – 7

As mentioned, linked up nicely with Gnonto down the left channel. It was his good corner delivery that resulted in Rutter’s goal and a couple of mazy dribbles weaved in there for good effect, but did miss a sitter.

Joe Gelhardt – 6

Couldn’t really impact the game leading the line like Joseph did in the first half, but did look slightly brighter than Piroe.

Harry Gray – n/a

Only got 15 minutes but just incredible to see him on the pitch for the first team at his age, so soon after Archie’s exit. Got his own rendition of his brother’s chant, too.

Luca Thomas – n/a

Not on for long.

Sam Chambers – n/a

Only on for a matter of minutes but fantastic moment for him to get on the scoresheet.
