Leeds United have an obvious decision after Gustavo Hamer and Brendan Aaronson comparison

Leeds United are chasing Gustavo Hamer in the summer transfer window and it’s easy to see why when you compare him to Brenden Aaronson.

The summer transfer window will soon open wide and Leeds United are set to be one of the most active clubs operating in it.

Daniel Farke is focused on significantly improving his squad in preparation for Leeds’ return to the Premier League.

But it’s not just about spending lots of money, but spending it wisely, as the struggles of Ipswich Town, Southampton and Leicester City after each spending bucket loads prove.

Leeds need Premier League experience as well as quality and, with PSR restrictions also a factor, getting that on the cheap would be very handy.

Gustavo Hamer ticks every box and Sheffield United appear resigned to losing him for around £20m after defeat in the Play-off final to Sunderland.

Leeds have been interested in Hamer for years and could now finally have their chance to sign him, though Angus Kinnear’s Everton are also keen.

The decision to pursue and, hopefully, sign Hamer becomes even more obvious when you compare his Premier League stats to Brenden Aaronson’s.

Gustavo Hamer Premier League stats compared to Brenden Aaronson

Farke is looking for a new playmaker after Aaronson struggled to be a creative force in the Championship, picking up just two assists last season.

The Whites desperately need Premier League know-how if they want to survive, too, and Hamer does have one season of top-flight experience under his belt.

Aaronson also spent one season in the Premier League and here’s how the two creative midfielders’ stats compare.

Hamer and Aaronson both played the same number of games in struggling sides that were eventually relegated.

Leeds were streets ahead of Sheffield United, though, accumulating 31 points in their relegation campaign compared to the Blades’ 16.

Despite playing in a worse side that scored just 35 goals, Hamer far outperformed Aaronson in every attacking metric.

Not only did he set up double the number of goals and score four, but he created far more chances as well. With 10 goal contributions, Hamer was directly involved with 28.6% of all of Sheffield United’s goals that season.

Aaronson contributed towards just 8.3% of Leeds’ 48 goals when they were relegated.

Hamer would clearly be an upgrade on Aaronson if he were signed this summer.

Should Leeds United sell Brenden Aaronson?

No. Despite his struggles in the Championship and the obvious need for an upgrade, Aaronson could still be a very useful option for Farke when he is going to need all the help he can get.

Though the American only set up two goals last season, he did score a healthy return of nine and that’s nothing to sniff at when goals are going to be at a premium.

Perhaps even more important is the fact that Aaronson was available for every single game and didn’t pick up one injury.

That sort of reliability is rare these days due to the strain on footballers’ bodies but Aaronson lasted the entirety of a gruelling campaign and it can’t be underestimated how useful that is for a manager.

If a good offer comes in, Leeds may be tempted to sell so they can invest more elsewhere, but they should try and keep Aaronson so their strength in depth does not deplete.
