Junior Firpo will be having words with £15m Leeds United teammate after what Jon Newsome spotted

It wasn’t Leeds United’s best performance on Tuesday night. Not the swashbuckling, in-control display that Leeds fans have come to expect under the stewardship of Daniel Farke.

This season, Leeds fans and the players have come to expect a side that control the ball and when they don’t have it, they still manage to control the opposition. A record of 22 clean sheets is proof of that.

That, and 80 goals scored – way more than any other Championship side. Norwich and Middlesbrough have scored the second and third-most amount of goals, with 62 and 61 scored by both clubs.

But there are areas in which Leeds need to improve on and that was clear on Tuesday. Jon Newsome identified one clear issue and it was down Leeds’ left flank, where Boro’s only real chance originated.

What Jon Newsome noticed about Manor Solomon, Junior Firpo

Before the game, Leeds fans wanted Manor Solomon dropped. But the Israel star then popped up with a crucial assist for Dan James’ goal and should have had two, had Ao Tanaka’s goal rightfully stood.

Solomon caused a fuss when being substituted and not for the first time and now, he may be on the end of a telling off from Junior Firpo with Newsome noticing how £15m Solomon leaves Firpo unprotected.

Newsome told BBC RL: On a couple of occasions, he [Solomon] was caught out of position, didn’t track back and does cause Firpo – who is not the most defensive-minded full-back as it is – some problems.”

This is not the Premier League, this is the Championship where quality is key – but so is hard work. The teams that get promoted are the teams that are willing to go that extra yard and Solomon isn’t.

His body language has not been good in recent weeks, coinciding with his lack of goals. But there is no excuse for a lack of work rate or tracking your man and it left Firpo in the lurch on a few occasions.

Daniel Farke seems as though he will stick with Solomon for the final five games after having a hand in 16 goals this season. But if that is the case, Firpo needs to have a word with Solomon and tell him to help.
