Leeds United are closing on the signing of Bayer Leverkusen ace Nadiem Amiri after he performed a u-turn and deciding to join – and Xabi Alonso’s 2022 verdict pinpoints what he will bring to Elland Road.
The five-time Germany international was the subject of an offer from Leeds, but initial reports were that he rejected us. He was wary of a move to the Championship, as per a report from German site Kicker.
However, with Marseille failing to agree a fee and Daniel Farke’s personal admiration of Amiri shining through, it appears he will end up at Leeds. Amiri played 28 of his 36 games under Alonso last term.
He benefitted from the arrival of Alonso as manager, having struggled to get into the starting XI under previous manager Gerardo Seoane. But with his deal ending next summer, Bayer are willing to cash in.
Leeds have taken advantage – with Kicker now reporting that he will sign a four-year deal and join for a fee between £4.5m-£5m. Speaking in October 2022, Alonso says Amiri provides real energy in attack.
“in the long week of training ahead of the game against Wolfsburg, he clearly showed he wants to play and he has also earned the chance. That’s great for us because he is a player with a lot of energy.”

What a signing Amiri will be for Leeds. If it all goes to plan after the u-turn, Leeds look as though they will have their man. A no.10 that can score and create goals and has done in the top tier of Germany.
Good enough not only to earn one cap for Germany and fail to get back at that level, but to do so five times. Yes, Amiri needs a restart to his career – but a move to Leeds might just help kickstart that.
