Leeds United manager Daniel Farke says Georginio Rutter could be available for the trip to Birmingham City.

Farke was speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of Leeds’ second game of the season on Saturday, where he also provided an update on Sam Greenwood.

Rutter missed both Leeds’ Championship opener with Cardiff City, and Carabao Cup tie with Shrewsbury Town after picking up a side strain in the final pre-season friendly at Hearts.

Greenwood, meanwhile, has not featured since the first game of the summer against Manchester United, though the nature of his injury was never confirmed.

Leeds are already in the midst of an injury crisis just one game into the season with the likes of Crysencio Summerville, Liam Cooper and Jack Harrison also on the treatment table.

However, Farke has provided somewhat of a positive update on the injury front, particularly with the news that Rutter could be available at the weekend.

He said: “Rutter and Greenwood joined training today, Sam has been out for four weeks so no chance of playing on the weekend. But Georgie has only been out for 1.5 weeks, so let’s see how he develops over the next 48 hours – could be available, would be a boost.”

Rutter being back in contention is big news for Leeds given how short they are for options to lead the line.

Wilfried Gnonto was tasked with doing so last weekend and did so admirably, but given the speculation surrounding his future is unclear what sort of frame of mind he will be in if he does play.

Rutter, though, will provide Leeds with some sort of platform to play off up front and his pace and dribbling ability should cause Championship defences plenty of problems.
