Stuart Dallas is said to be fully aware that Leeds United will not just offer a new deal “on a whim” out of sentiment, with the midfielder’s current contract set to expire at the end of 23-24 at Elland Road.
Dallas, 32, is still yet to make his return after breaking his leg against Manchester City, following a duel with Jack Grealish. It has now been 20 months since the incident, and Dallas is still undergoing rehab.
The Northern Ireland star was forced to undergo an operation that lasted nearly eight hours, as Leeds’ head of medicine Rob Price explained. Dallas sheered one of the ball joints off the bottom of his femur.
Dallas has been back in team training but not on a regular basis. It is unclear when Dallas will get the chance to pull a Leeds jersey back on. His contract is due to expire at the end of the current season.
Phil Hay reports in his latest Athletic piece that Dallas is fully aware he might not win himself a new deal out of sentiment or on a whim at Elland Road. It might be that Dallas needs to prove himself, first.
“Dallas, who could become a free agent and has not appeared for more than 18 months is bright enough to realise that after so long recovering from a fractured femur, Leeds will not tie him down on a whim.”

Even if Dallas is not the player he once was, the Dallas that scored a brace against Manchester City, he deserves the chance to show he is worthy of a new deal. The versatile star has been superb for Leeds.
A player that Steve Evans once described as “wonderful”, Dallas would be like a new signing even if he is not 100% of what he once was. A brilliant option, in so many different positions. He needs a new deal.
