Mason Holgate emerged as a surprise target for Leeds United on deadline day but as soon as those links appeared, they have disappeared – as Sean Dyche confirms he’s going to join Sheffield United.
Holgate, 27, has been on loan at promotion rivals Southampton since the summer but has only played seven times for the Saints. The Everton defender has struggled for game time and he’s on the move.
It was claimed that Holgate might have appeared as a target for Leeds on deadline day with the player looking to cancel his loan if there was an opportunity to go on loan elsewhere. That is now the case.
But he is not going to Leeds. Indeed, Sheffield United were reported to have been in talks earlier today – and now, Sean Dyche has commented. The Everton boss confirms that Holgate is off to Bramall Lane.

As per Sky Sports on their Transfer Centre (February 1, 2:03PM), Dyche said that it is a deal that suits both clubs: “It’s looking like that one will go through, it’s a deal that suits us and Sheffield United.”

Holgate would have been a smart signing. A player that has proven himself in the Premier League and the Championship, one that can play anywhere in the back line and even in midfield if so required.
But like it is with Nottingham Forest captain Joe Worrall, Holgate is presented with the chance of game time at Sheffield United – likely to be regular – or, cover at Elland Road. A no-brainer then, for Holgate.
