Why the stats show Wilfried Gnonto has been incredibly unlucky for Leeds United this season

Most Leeds United fans would answer Wilfried Gnonto when asked for the club’s best attacking option, or the one that has been in the best form during Leeds’ 11 Championship games.

Winning the club’s September Player of the Month award, 13-time Italy star Gnonto has had a hand in six goals for Leeds this season. The wide man has scored two goals, and laid on a further four Leeds assists.

When a team is in form, the team normally picks itself and that is the case with Leeds. The goalkeeper, defence and midfield is not up for debate although Junior Firpo is suspended for Saturday’s outing.

In attack, there are a couple of options Daniel Farke has to decide. Whether to keep Brenden Aaronson in the 10, Mateo Joseph or Joel Piroe up top and who fills the void on the left flank moving forward.

Wilfried Gnonto is the Championship’s unluckiest attacking player

But on the right, it goes without saying that Gnonto starts. He has taken on that main-man aura at Leeds after Gnonto signed a new Leeds deal, after losing duo Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter.

Gnonto though, has been largely unlucky to have only scored two goals. Indeed, the former Inter Milan star has attempted 28 shots in his 11 games but more than half of those shots have been blocked.

Indeed, 15 of Gnonto’s efforts at goal have been blocked by an opposing defender. The winger’s 15 shots being blocked is more than any other Championship player, the second-next player has had 11 blocked.

While Gnonto is the most-unlucky player in the Championship when it comes to having his shots blocked, it is Middlesbrough that are probably the most-unfortunate clubs in terms of their attempts being denied.

Gnonto has been excellent in terms of assists so far, moments like his cross for Joel Piroe’s header against Sunderland. A goal that shared similarities to Piroe’s header against Norwich in the play-off semi-finals.

There is no doubting that Gnonto will be starting on Saturday but hopefully, the winger can get one of his attempts at goal actually on goal without a defender getting himself in the way as Leeds eye three points.
