Why the 49ers still have some ‘hope’ over Daniel Farke saving Leeds United despite concerns

Daniel Farke is clinging on to his job at Leeds.

Eight defeats in 13 Premier League games so far this term have left Leeds 18th and in danger of an immediate return to the Championship, which would be a nightmare for fans and the 49ers.

A shortlist of potential replacements for Daniel Farke is already being drafted up by the looks of it, as Leeds consider Gary O’Neil and Brendan Rodgers – along with Ange Postecoglou and Zsolt Low.

It all seemingly depends on what happens this week against Chelsea and Liverpool – but Rob Dorsett of Sky Sports has now shared why the 49ers still carry some “hope” over the German.

Daniel Farke has offered a glimmer of “hope” to the 49ers with his tactical tweak

It sounds like the second half display at Manchester City left a real impact on those in the boardroom.

Phil Foden gives Daniel Farke credit for his half-time switch🗣️

“It’s up there as one of the wildest games. We had full control in the first half. They changed their system in the second half and we couldn’t get going.”

Dorsett has taken to X (previously known as Twitter) to post that the 49ers are concerned by the recent run of four consecutive defeats, and “serious conversations” will take place if Leeds lose to Chelsea.

However, it is also said that “hope” over Farke remains purely due to his changes at the interval against Manchester City, which saw Leeds fight back from 2-0 down at the Etihad Stadium to briefly make it 2-2.

Leeds reverted to a five-man defence with Joe Rodon, Jaka Bijol and Pascal Struijk in the centre, along with Jayden Bogle and James Justin as wing-backs.

Dorsett wrote in full: “Tonight’s game v Chelsea could prove pivotal for Daniel Farke’s future at Leeds. I’m told bosses at Elland Road concerned by Autumn downturn in results and there will be serious conversations if four straight defeats become five. Tweaked tactics and a more spirited second half v Manchester City give (them) hope.”

Daniel Farke has left it too late at Leeds United to show any tactical versatility

Of course, Phil Foden netted a heartbreaking winner in the 91st minute to undo all of that hard work, but it was certainly encouraging to see Leeds battle back to draw level against a daunting opponent.

Having said that, Leeds fans can quite fairly ask Farke why it took 12 and a half games for him to adjust his tactics, and wasted a large chunk of the campaign being far too easy to figure out on the pitch.

For most of this campaign, the 49-year-old has left his side untouched during games despite opposition managers tinkering to get a result and usually outwitting him, as Unai Emery did at Elland Road by bringing Donyell Malen on at the interval and ultimately leaving with all three points.

Some might deem it harsh for Farke to have to beat Chelsea and Liverpool to keep his job this week – which the Guardian believe is the case – but it is simply a situation of his own making.
