Max Wober is a professional footballer who plays as a centre-back for Werder Bremen, on loan from Leeds United.
Leeds United thought they’d pulled off a coup when they signed burly defender Max Wober from Red Bull Salzburg in 2023.
Wober was a solid, experienced and goal-getting defender in his native Austria but didn’t have the same impact in Yorkshire.
He is now out on his second stint on loan away from the club after Daniel Farke allowed him to leave, spending the season at Werder Bremen, but has suffered a serious injury.
Here’s what you need to know about him.

Max Wober age and height
Maximilian Wober was born in Vienna, Austria, on February 4, 1998. As of September 2025, he is 27 years old.
He is in the peak years of his career, but his string of bad luck with injuries means he is losing plenty of chances to play at his best.
Wober stands at 6’2″ tall and, coupled with his hulking frame, he is a physically imposing defender who can compete in the air and on the ground.
How much did Leeds United pay for Max Wober?
Leeds paid £11m to sign Wober in January 2023 from Red Bull Salzburg, recruiting the defender in the hope of adding extra solidity to the side amid a battle for Premier League survival.
It did not work.
Wober would play in just two league victories and only managed to keep two clean sheets as Leeds were relegated from the top flight. Leeds conceded 29 goals in Wober’s 16 matches.
Taking advantage of a loan clause placed in his contract by the previous Leeds regime, Wober departed for Borussia Monchengladbach for the season upon relegation.
Max Wober salary
It’s reported that Wober earns £35,000 a week at Leeds, which works out at £1.82m a year.
That would put the Austrian around the midrange point on Leeds’ wage bill, but Leeds United News understands he actually earns slightly more.
Though he is out on loan, Leeds may still be paying a percentage of his wage. He is contracted to Leeds until 2027, but Werder Bremen do have the option to buy him.
Max Wober stats
Injuries have plagued Wober’s promising career in recent years, which, coupled with his two loan exits, has severely limited how many games he has played for Leeds.
Wober returned to Elland Road following his stint at Monchengladbach and was in the squad for the Championship-winning campaign, but only played nine games as he was sidelined for months with knee injuries.
Wober has enjoyed a well-travelled career, though, playing in five different countries, and here are his stats.

Praise for Max Wober
After Wober joined Werder Bremen in the summer of 2025, the defender came in for high praise from officials at his new club.
Peter Niemeyer, Bremen’s Head of Professional Football, said: “With him, we’re getting an internationally experienced defender who will bring stability to our back line.
“We’re confident he can continue his positive development here.”
Head coach Horst Steffen added: “Maximilian is tactically smart, can play centrally or on the left, and he’s tough in challenges and strong in the air.”
