Joe Gelhardt is a professional footballer who plays as a striker for Hull City, on loan from Leeds United.
Hopes were high when Leeds United signed young, promising striker Joe Gelhardt in 2020.
The young Liverpudlian spent a year in the youth ranks before making his debut and then remained in the first team for years.
Other than a brief loan spell at Sunderland in 2023, Gelhardt was in the first team from 2021 to 2025 and was given plenty of chances to impress.
He scored his first goal for the club against Chelsea in December 2021 but has only been able to add two more since.
Gelhardt was given a lot of opportunities by Jesse Marsch and then Daniel Farke, but struggled to seize them and is now back at Hull City for his second stint on loan.
He has impressed on the Humber, so there is still a chance he could reach his full potential, but time is running out.
Here is what you need to know about him.

Joe Gelhardt age and height
Joseph Paul Gelhardt was born in Liverpool, England, on May 4, 2002.
As of September 2025, he is just 23 years old but has already got years of experience under his belt as he made his senior debut for Wigan aged just 16.
Though his career has stalled, he still has plenty of time to realise his full potential.
Gelhardt stands at 5’9″ tall.
That is small for a striker, but Gelhardt remains a physical presence when leading the line and brings great energy to the position.
How much did Leeds pay for Joe Gelhardt?
After bursting on the scene at Wigan Athletic, Leeds moved to sign Gelhardt in the summer transfer window of 2020.
Though he was still just a teenager at the time, Leeds splashed out £1m on Gelhardt, hoping he would reach his full potential at Elland Road.
Joe Gelhardt salary
It’s reported that Gelhardt earns £15,000 a week at Leeds, which works out at £780,000 a year, and puts him towards the low end of the club’s wage bill.
However, Leeds United News understands Gelhardt is actually on a significantly higher wage. He is contracted to Leeds until 2027.
The club will still be paying a percentage of his salary while he is out on loan at Hull.
Joe Gelhardt stats
Gelhardt has signed for two clubs permanently in his career and also gone out on two loan stints. Here are his career stats so far:
| Team | Games | Goals | Assists | Yellow cards | Red cards |
| Wigan Athletic | 21 | 1 | 0 | 2 | 0 |
| Leeds United | 57 | 3 | 7 | 6 | 0 |
| Sunderland (loan) | 20 | 3 | 3 | 1 | 0 |
| Hull City (loan) | 27 | 7 | 1 | 5 | 0 |
For a striker, he hasn’t scored a great deal of goals in his career and will have to start finding the net consistently at Hull if he is to have any chance of having a future at Leeds.

Praise for Joe Gelhardt
After impressing in the second half of the 2024-25 season on Humberside, Hull City were desperate to bring Gelhardt back for the new season, just as much as he was keen to return.
After completing the deal, Tigers boss Sergej Jakirovic said: “He was my vision.
“I asked so many times about him because, in our situation with the embargo and everything else, he wanted to come to us. We need such a player, and there’s no adaptation time.
“The group likes him, and he knows our environment as well, so this is a very, very good choice for us.”
