Leeds United are in action on Wednesday night when the Whites welcome Luton Town to Elland Road, but Leeds fans will have been watching Tuesday night’s Championship results eagerly.
Sunday afternoon saw Leeds secure a late and important 4-3 away win over Swansea City. The Welsh side had equalised in injury time, but Wilfried Gnonto came off the bench to score a fourth for The Whites.
A ninth Championship win of the season saw Leeds climb above Sheffield United and Sunderland to the top of the table. A 10-man Sheffield United had failed to beat Coventry, Sunderland drawing at Millwall.

Sunderland, Sheffield United and Burnley play on Tuesday night
Leeds are in action on Wednesday evening this week, having played on Sunday. Rob Edwards’ Luton go to Elland Road in a game that sees a rejuvenated Hatters side look to give a stern test for Daniel Farke’s side.
But Leeds’ promotion rivals were all doing battle on Tuesday night. Sunderland hosted a West Brom side in danger of losing their manager, with Leicester City ready to pay the £2m fee to land Carlos Corberan.
Meanwhile, Sheffield United played host to Oxford United and Burnley hosted managerless Coventry City. There were easy wins for Sheffield United and Coventry, winning their matches 3-0 and 2-0 on Tuesday.
But for Sunderland, it was another frustrating night. Regis Le Bris’ side have endured a difficult November, with suspension and injuries taking their toll. They drew 0-0 against West Brom, a fifth draw in a row.
Where do Tuesday night’s results leave Leeds United in table?
Leeds, Sunderland and Sheffield United started the night on 32 points, with Burnley on 30 in fourth. But the results saw Sheffield United climb to the top of the table, and then Burnley go into second place.
| Position | Club | Games played | Wins | Draws | Losses | GD | Points |
| 1. | Sheffield United | 17 | 11 | 4 | 2 | 15 | 35 |
| 2. | Burnley | 17 | 9 | 6 | 2 | 15 | 33 |
| 3. | Sunderland | 17 | 9 | 6 | 2 | 14 | 33 |
| 4. | Leeds United | 16 | 9 | 5 | 2 | 16 | 32 |
Sunderland’s fifth consecutive draw saw them remain in third with Leeds now in fourth but of course, a game in hand against Luton on Wednesday. Leeds still boast a better goal difference than the other three.
A win of any kind against Edwards’ Luton will see Leeds return to the top of the Championship table. But that will be easier said than done against a Luton side who have had an extra day’s rest, and beat Hull.
