Steven Gerrard could be targeted by the 49ers at Leeds United if they complete a takeover of the club from Andrea Radrizzani – and while he was Aston Villa boss, the Anfield icon was very complimentary of Leeds and Elland Road.

With a takeover now getting closer and closer, the 49ers will have a number of decisions to make. Angus Kinnear, according to Sky Sports, will stay put at the club. Leeds Live say he has been overseeing talks for a new manager.

The Sun claimed this week that Gerrard could be one of a number of candidates the 49ers look at when appointing a new manager. Gerrard starred as Rangers manager, but struggled at Aston Villa. Gary McAllister, his assistant.

Speaking at the start of the 22-23 season ahead of a 0-0 draw with Leeds in which Luis Sinisterra was sent off for a second yellow – Gerrard is quoted by the Birmingham Mail as raving about Leeds, and the Elland Road atmosphere.

“Leeds are a fantastic club. I’ve got a lot of respect for Leeds, I’ve followed them for many, many years. I was lucky enough to go and play at Elland Road on many occasions. Great set of fans and a club that has took a few bumps.

“A few knocks along the way, but it seems to be back in a good place. It’s always tough there. It’s a fantastic stadium and the fans get right behind the team,” Gerrard continued in a pre-match press conference in September 2022.

There will be a large proportion of Leeds fans that are against the appointment of Gerrard. He started well at Villa, before struggling and eventually, being sacked. His exit has been worsened by the amazing form under Unai Emery.

But his work at Rangers completely changed the direction the Ibrox club was going in. They were miles away from rivals Celtic when he took over and finished by beating Celtic in an unbeaten league season. He has what it takes.
