What Paul Scholes said about ‘brilliant’ Leeds United fans as Daniel Farke sends divisive Millwall rally cry

Leeds United against Millwall has become a crunch match in the race for automatic promotion this season. Daniel Farke’s side desperately need a win.

Just a couple of weeks ago, Leeds United had a comfortable five point lead over Sheffield United at the top of the Championship table, and there looked to be nothing stopping the Whites on their way to the title.

But a couple of results later, the last being a 1-0 defeat away at Portsmouth, and all of a sudden, Leeds’ promotion hopes are in jeopardy.

On Tuesday night, Sheffield United drew 1-1 with Bristol City to overtake Leeds United at the top of the table, just by the one point, whilst Burnley in 3rd move to within a point of Leeds after drawing against West Brom.

It’s made the game against Millwall at Elland Road on Wednesday night a huge one in the race for promotion this season, and one that Leeds United simply have to win.

Elland Road atmosphere can lead Leeds United to victory against Millwall

Elland Road is one of the best stadiums for atmosphere in the world, let alone the Championship and England. And Leeds fans are likewise, so much so that many a former player has hailed the atmosphere at Elland Road, one such player being former Manchester United and England man Paul Scholes.

Speaking in 2024, Scholes was naming some of the stadiums that he and his United teammates used to love playing at, with Elland Road quickly coming into the conversation.

He told Sports Joe: “We loved going to places where everyone is baying for blood. It’s brilliant. You’d go to Leeds, I know it’s on a domestic point of view… (they were) psychopaths! Absolutely mental fans.”

Daniel Farke’s Leeds United rallying cry ahead of Millwall

No matter the occasion, Leeds United fans are often in full voice. But Farke has made a special request for support ahead of Wednesday night’s match following that defeat against Portsmouth.

Farke has angered some Leeds United fans with his words, though. He said: “We need our supporters, the best supporters in this country. We have five home games to go. If our supporters sing us to five home wins we will definitely be in the top two. We have to build unity.

“Everyone has to be at our best at Elland Road on Wednesday and we have to make sure that the whole stadium is buzzing.”

If Leeds can bring the kind of atmosphere on Wednesday that Scholes and co used to both love and hate, then it’ll make for a very difficult evening for Millwall, who’ll fancy their chances after beating Leeds United in the FA Cup in January.
