What Joe Rodon did in Wales win over Montenegro that left national media very impressed

Joe Rodon and Karl Darlow were the latest Leeds United players in action for their country on Monday night.

The Leeds duo were both in Wales’ starting XI for the home clash against Montenegro, a game in which they won 1-0 thanks to Harry Wilson’s first half penalty.

Rodon has quickly become a staple of Craig Bellamy’s Wales side and so this is the second 90 minutes he has played over this international break, having also done so in Iceland on Friday night.

Darlow, meanwhile, is still battling with Danny Ward for that number one spot. He has started two of four matches since pledging his allegiance to Wales.

Both players got through 90 minutes seemingly in Cardiff and so will return to Leeds without any injury issues, something which Daniel Farke will be relieved by.

What Welsh media made of Joe Rodon performance

Rodon is still searching to find his real top level since returning to Leeds permanently, though the signs recently suggest he is getting close to that.

Despite only coming away with a point, Rodon was brilliant in Leeds’ recent 2-2 draw at Sunderland, and it would seem he has continued that form with Wales.

Rodon was disappointed to only draw in Iceland on Friday, but his performance prompted Welsh media to question when the last time he lost a header in a Wales shirt was.

And after keeping a clean sheet on Monday night, Wales Online was again full of praise for how Rodon played.

Rodon’s display was hailed as ‘terrific’ by the news outlet, with some ‘big interventions late on’ playing a big role in Wales’ coming away with three points.

They wrote: “Joe Rodon 8 – Been in top form for his club and continued that at Cardiff City Stadium. So rarely lets you down. A top operator and another terrific performance. Some big interventions late on.”

Welsh media deliver verdict on Karl Darlow

Darlow will be looking to use his time with Wales as a platform to showcase to Farke why he should be number one at Leeds.

The goalkeeping position has come under particular scrutiny in the last couple of weeks, following Illan Meslier’s catastrophic error at Sunderland last time out.

Rodon recently hailed Darlow as a really good player and as per the Welsh media, it appears as though he produced a decent performance on international duty.

They wrote: “Karl Darlow 6. Had very little to do but did well enough when called upon. Pretty calming influence with the ball at his feet but one or two wayward passes later on.”
