Archie Gray shares which Leeds United player has actually really impressed him this season

Archie Gray may no longer be at Leeds United but he is still certainly keeping an eye on what is going on at Elland Road.

Gray is a boyhood supporter of Leeds but left to join Tottenham Hotspur in a £40 million deal back in July following the Whites’ failure to win promotion back to the Premier League.

The 18-year-old has had a steady start to life at Spurs as he still awaits his first league start for the club, though the cup competitions have provided him with plenty of opportunities to play.

After a 2-1 win at Ferencvaros in the Europa League, Spurs’ local media tipped Gray for a huge future in North London and so surely it isn’t long before he is rewarded with a full league debut.

And as difficult as it may be, hopefully it isn’t too long until Gray can lock horns with his former club, as Leeds look to go one better in their quest for promotion this time around.

Gray makes Mateo Joseph claim after Leeds start to season

Having lost four of the starters from the play-off final XI against Southampton back in May, Daniel Farke‘s side has had a slightly different look to it this season.

Though not a new signing, Mateo Joseph is one of the players getting his opportunity this term, having not been handed a single league start in the 2023/24 campaign.

Joseph played in Leeds’ U21s side alongside Gray and while it has taken slightly longer to really establish himself, both progressed into the first team at a similar time.

Despite scoring only one league goal, Tony Dorigo is among those impressed with Joseph this season, with former Leeds teammate Gray another.

Speaking in an interview with the Yorkshire Evening Post, Gray believes Joseph has been ‘brilliant’ so far and is delighted to see him doing so well given they still remain in contact.

He said: “Mateo is doing brilliant. He scored a hat trick, I think it was last night. He’s doing well for Leeds, we came through the ranks together since Under-18s.

“And you know, I’m still really close with him, really good friends, and I’m always looking out for him, how he’s doing. It’d be amazing to play against him and I’d really enjoy it.”

Joseph eyeing Leeds promotion

While goals have been slightly hard to come by for Joseph in the Championship, he has had no such trouble on the international stage.

Having scored off the bench against both Belgium and Scotland, Joseph scored a first half hattrick on his first start for Spain U21s against Kazakhstan last Thursday.

Speaking after that game, Joseph spoke of his pride at being able to represent his country, as well as his aim for the season with Leeds.

He said: “Very happy to represent my country, I have always wanted to be here. My goal is to do the best I can with Leeds, to get promoted, which is where the club deserves to be.”
