Barnsley and Manchester United were in Carabao Cup action against each other at Old Trafford but it was Leeds United on the lips of both sets of supporters at one stage.

The League One side made the trip across the Pennines on what was a big night for the club, that ultimately ended with a very humbling defeat.

Man United were able to able to show the gap in both finance and quality with a resounding 7-0 victory as Barnsley failed to put up any sort of resistance.

Marcus Rashford (2), Antony, Alejandro Garnacho (2) and Cristian Eriksen (2) were the men on the scoresheet for the home side.

And so with very little to cheer on the pitch for the away end, they resorted to making their own entertainment in the stands, which resulted in a chant about Leeds.

What Man United and Barnsley chanted about Leeds

Being Yorkshire neighbours, there is somewhat of a rivalry between Leeds and Barnsley, though it certainly does not extend to anything beyond Geographical location.

As such, Leeds fans certainly would not think to start a chant about the South Yorkshire side, particularly in a game which doesn’t involve them.

For Manchester United, though, there is a considerably more historic dislike between the two clubs.

It is only due to Leeds’ failings on the pitch in the last 20 years they have not been able to play each other more, which has perhaps reduced the rivalry a tad from their behalf.

Having said that, any opportunity Manchester United fans get to chant about Leeds they take and that was the case against Barnsley last night.

Picked up by Sky Sports, the away end were heard chanting, ‘Leeds are falling apart again’, to which the Old Trafford crowd took joy in joining in with.

Yorkshire Post journalist Leon Wobschall also picked up on the two sets of supporters chanting in unison against Leeds, with Barnsley getting it started when they were 5-0 down and clearly bored of what was happening on the pitch.

Burnley also mocked at Leeds after Elland Road win

Particularly when in the Championship, this is unfortunately a chant Leeds have been forced to get used to in recent years.

And that was no different after Burnley’s win at Elland Road on Saturday, with their media team posting a clip of their winning goal on TikTok accompanied by the sound of ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’.

From Leeds’ perspective, this should only add more fuel to the fire when it comes to wanting to achieve their goal of promotion this season.

Leeds took a lot of stick from the likes of Leicester City and Southampton after failing in the 2023/24 campaign, and so it would be nice to be on the other end of the joke in May.
