£27m player scores one and assists two on second start for new club after Angus Kinnear said Leeds wanted him

Angus Kinnear had plenty of interesting things to say about Leeds United in his recent yearly interview with the Square Ball.

On top of talking about how Leeds‘ plans to redevelop Elland Road are progressing, perhaps the most interesting topic was around transfers.

Considering how much Leeds spent on signings in comparison to what was brought in through sales, there was a slight feeling of underwhelm at how the window went. No club in world football made a higher profit than Leeds.

And it was only supporters who were left feeling slightly disappointed at the summer, but also Daniel Farke himself, due to the failure to add a new number 10.

Leeds certainly attempted to bring one in, but Kinnear revealed they could not find one within their budget that everyone felt would improve the squad.

Leeds target Fabio Carvalho shines for Brentford

If what Kinnear said is to be believed, Leeds certainly targeted some ambitious names to improve the squad in the final third.

Gustavo Hamer and Emi Buendia were perhaps the headline names, though Fabio Carvalho and James McAtee were also mentioned by Kinnear.

Kinnear claimed that Leeds had both Carvalho and McAtee on the list had both Liverpool and Manchester City decided to loan them out for another season.

However, after spending the second half of the 2023/24 campaign on loan at Hull City, Carvalho managed to earn himself a £27 million move to Brentford.

Carvalho is yet to start in the Premier League since his arrival at the Bees, but shone in Carabao Cup action against Leyton Orient on Tuesday night.

He netted one goal and provided two assists as Brentford comfortably dispatched of the League One side 3-1 to progress through to the next round of the competition.

Just like Emi Buendia, Carvalho was never realistic for Leeds

Based on the names Kinnear mentioned, it really is not much of a surprise that Leeds failed to get a number 10.

As a Championship club, all of those names are just simply far too ambitious and scream of a club trying to show they tried, rather than having a realistic shot at signing them.

After enjoying a positive time at the Tigers, Carvalho was never going to be willing to drop down to the Championship for yet another season.
