Welsh media rate Leeds United quartet after 1-0 win, Joe Rodon and Dan James praised but Ethan Ampadu blasted

Four Leeds United players started for Wales as the Dragons secured a 1-0 win over Liechtenstein in FIFA World Cup qualifying.

Karl Darlow was named in between the sticks as Joe Rodon started ahead of him in central defence, behind Ethan Ampadu in midfield and Dan James on the right of the attack.

The result moved Wales up to third in Group J – level on points with North Macedonia and just two points behind Belgium at the time of writing – and Wales Online have now rated the Leeds quartet.

Ethan Ampadu the only Leeds United star with a blot on his copybook on straightforward night for Wales

It was a largely comfortable night for Wales, recording 78% of the possession and taking 18 shots compared to just three from Liechtenstein.

However, Ampadu was described as “rash” by Wales Online after receiving a yellow card for a high foot, a booking which now means he is suspended for the crucial clash against North Macedonia on Tuesday.

They wrote: “Displayed his typical composure throughout and dictated play nicely, but, like (Jordan) James, a rash challenge saw him cautioned and he will also serve a suspension.”

Wales Online were far more complimentary towards the other Leeds players involved.

On Rodon – who says he messages Ampadu more than any other Leeds teammate – they wrote: “Read the game really well and started most attacks while playing out from the back. Another easy game for him.”

Regarding James – who sent a message to Daniel Farke with his display – their rating said: “Showed his usual pace and direct running with some great moves in behind – one occasion saw him released before setting up Jordan James for the winner.”

Darlow didn’t even have to face a shot on target, and his rating reflects that. Wales Online posted: “Had literally nothing to do other than to pass the ball to his centre-backs on the odd occasion he had the ball.”

It is a shame that Ampadu will miss the crucial FIFA World Cup qualifier on Tuesday between Wales and North Macedonia, but at least Farke will get his No.4 back with plenty of rest.

What Ethan Ampadu has said after his “rash” moment

While Farke will get a rested Ampadu back at Thorp Arch, the German might have to lift his spirits a bit if Wales go on to suffer defeat on Tuesday without him.

The 25-year-old sounds hugely frustrated about his suspension, telling the BBC: “I am very gutted. It’s annoying because I don’t think I touched the guy and I won the ball.”

Hopefully, Darlow, Rodon and James can still fire Wales to victory over North Macedonia in the absence of Ampadu.
