Welsh media give instant verdict on out-on-loan Leeds man James after USA draw

Wales Online have given their player ratings immediately after Rob Page’s side drew 1-1 with USA on Monday evening in the World Cup – and Dan James has been given a 5/10, with the out-on-loan Leeds man coming off at half-time.

James, 25, left Leeds in the summer to join Fulham on a season-long loan. It comes after clocking just 40 appearances for the Whites, having a hand in nine goals. But having brought in Luis Sinisterra and Brenden Aaronson, he departed.

Game time ahead of the World Cup was the aim – but he has since started just three times for Fulham. Nevertheless, he was given a start by Page as Wales took on USA. He came up against Tyler Adams. Aaronson started on the bench.

USA took the lead with Wales poor in the first half. It was ex-Celtic loanee Timo Weah who scored, latching on to a pass from Chelsea’s Christian Pulisic. James was replaced at half-time, with Bournemouth’s Kieffer Moore coming on.

The target man changed the game. He won the penalty for Wales, with Walker Zimmerman fouling him in the area. Gareth Bale salvaged a draw. For James, he will be disappointed and Wales Online gave their take after the match.

“Wales tried to use his speed but he struggled to make much of an impact without the focal point of Kieffer Moore alongside him. Pulled at half-time for Moore to come on,” Wales Online reported, handing him a rating of just 5/10.

It was a disappointing display from James – but not just him, the entirety of the Welsh side in the first half. They were poor and it needed a change of personnel to get Page’s men up the pitch. He made exactly the right substitution.

Perhaps harsh on James as he was no worse than any other Wales player in the first 45. He was the obvious player to take off, giving Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey the freedom around him. James may be on the bench next time out.
