Marcelo Bielsa has called a surprise press conference just 48 hours after Uruguay’s defeat to the United States, and both Leeds United and Uruguay supporters have been speculating why.

In true Bielsa fashion, the Argentine legend has left footballing fans on tenterhooks following the decision to stage a press conference. It sparks memories of his press conference after the 2019 Spygate scandal.

Back then, Bielsa was caught sending a spy to Derby County’s training ground to watch Frank Lampard’s training session. Having been caught, Bielsa delivered a spectacular press conference to explain himself.

Now, almost seven years later, Bielsa is facing the media just 48 hours after Brenden Aaronson played a cameo role in a 5-1 USA win. Tottenham star Rodrigo Bentancur had been sent off during the match.

The press conference is due to take place at 8pm local time in Montevideo, which means an 11pm start time for those in England. Now, Uruguayan sources share what is expected, and if Bielsa is to resign.

Uruguayan sources share whether Marcelo Bielsa plans to resign

Some Leeds fans have responded to the rumours that Bielsa could resign by ordering the club to re-hire him and replace Daniel Farke. However, that is not a widespread feeling among the entire Leeds fanbase.

Given Bielsa spoke to the media immediately after the defeat to Mauricio Pochettino’s side, it does feel strange that he has now decided to address reporters again. Hence the murmurs of him leaving his post.

But Uruguayan outlet Ovacion state that Bielsa, in true Bielsa style, has organised the press conference himself and resigning from his position as Uruguay manager is ‘not on the agenda’ later this evening.

Whether Farke will be sacked, is another question. Certainly, Uruguay’s form has been poor – winning just five of their last 18 games. However, a source told Ovacion directly: “I don’t think Bielsa will be dismissed.”

What Marcelo Bielsa said about his future after USA defeat

In those 18 matches, Uruguay have failed to score 10 times. Bielsa is not revered as he is in Yorkshire, especially after he decided to remove Inter Miami veteran Luis Suarez from the team back in 2024.

Asked if he was confident about his role as Uruguay manager after the USA defeat, Bielsa suggested he still sees himself in charge of Uruguay going into the 2026 World Cup in USA, Mexico and Canada.

“Of course I am, I’m confident because I believe in the talent Uruguayan football has and my ability to create a formidable team, something we’ve struggled to achieve for a long time,” Bielsa exclaimed.

While sources suggest Bielsa is not planning on leaving and his sacking is unlikely just eight months before the World Cup, Leeds fans will know how unpredictable he is and truly, anything could happen.
