Phil Hay say Glen Kamara’s performance for Leeds United on Saturday went ‘under the radar’ because of how good Archie Gray was.
Hay was speaking on the latest episode of the Square Ball Podcast, where he reviewed Leeds’ 2-1 win over Bristol City on Saturday, in what was the final game before the international break.
Leeds secured back-to-back league wins for the first time in almost 12 months at the weekend, building on the three points they picked up earlier in the week against QPR.
From that game, Daniel Farke made two changes to his starting XI, one of which was bringing Kamara back into midfield, with Gray moving out to right-back.
Though Gray has played there at youth level for England, the level of his performance in an unfamiliar role at senior level saw him win a vast amount of praise, and rightly so.
Hay says Kamara went ‘under the radar’ for Leeds
With much of the focus on Gray, Hay says Kamara’s performance was one that went ‘under the radar’ alongside Ethan Ampadu in central midfield.
“Kamara was quietly good, had Gray not been 17 you might have had eyes on him less and might’ve gone a little unnoticed the work he was doing but because it was him and his age, you were kind of watching him closely and in fine detail how good his performances was.
“Kamara I think again was probably under the radar. A good game with Ampadu and this is what I mean. After years in which Leeds have been short in central midfield, they just have done themselves a favour by addressing a few positions.”
Kamara was excellent at the weekend and without doubt produced his best performance in a Leeds shirt to date, as his match fitness continues to grow.
The 27-year-old was solid against both Watford and Southampton but took it up a level on Saturday, playing a vital role in both goals, for different reasons.
He is looking like another shrewd summer signing from Leeds and he is only likely to get better the more he plays, given his lack of pre-season.
