Tony Dorigo says player Leeds United recently sold would be at Real Madrid if he had Joel Piroe trait

Though still early days, no player has scored more goals for Leeds United than Joel Piroe this season.

Piroe netted his second of the Championship campaign in the 2-0 win at Cardiff City. That moved him level with Brenden Aaronson, who also has two.

However, Piroe’s return is made all the more impressive by his lack of minutes. His only start of the season came against West Bromwich Albion, meaning he averages a goal every 66 minutes.

Daniel Farke hailed Piroe as the best finisher in the Championship after his strike at Cardiff. It came at a point in the game where Leeds were missing chance after chance, until Piroe showed his composure.

Jon Newsome believes Farke should trial a Mateo Joseph and Piroe front two after his goal. Considering how wasteful Leeds were until he came on, that would certainly be interesting.

Dorigo says Georginio Rutter would be at Real Madrid

Piroe has been criticised at times since his move to Elland Road. When starting matches, he has been unable to nail down either that number nine or 10 spot.

However, if Leeds could choose one man for a chance to fall to, it would be Piroe. Last season’s tally of 14 was bettered only by Crysencio Summerville.

And despite starting 18 less matches across the Championship and play-offs than Georginio Rutter, he got double the amount of goals.

But Rutter’s performances for Leeds earned him a £40 million move to Brighton last month. He is still yet to score his first goal, with Brighton fans a little critical of Rutter so far.

Speaking on the latest episode of the Square Ball Podcast, former Leeds defender Tony Dorigo claimed Rutter would be at Real Madrid if he could finish like Piroe.

He said: “What we do know is getting him in the right areas, and feed him the right deliveries, he will score. He has got a calmness in front of goal that no one else has. We talked about Georginio Rutter earlier, if he had the calmness Joel Piroe had he’d be at Real Madrid.

“But Georgi hasn’t and it goes everywhere. We were looking at the stats from the weekend about Georgi and he had a shot that went how wide?”

Leeds star Piroe has best minutes for goal in Championship

As mentioned, Piroe has an incredible minutes per goal statistic this season. In fact, no one has better than him.

The only player who can take more plaudits than Piroe is West Brom’s Josh Maja. He already has six goals, at a minutes per goal of just 81. Here is a selection of players’ minutes per goal this season:

Joel Piroe266

Josh Maja681
Kasey Palmer285
Yuki Ohashi286

Though he will want to start more games, Piroe seems to have found his role in this Leeds team. Coming on when Leeds are already winning, when there is space for him to get chances.

He has now got two goals in these exact situations, one apiece against Hull City and Cardiff. A great asset for Farke to have.
