Tony Dorigo gives immediate reaction to Ben Whiteman’s ‘fierce’ tackle on Leeds United star Jayden Bogle

Preston North End could perhaps count themselves highly fortunate to have escaped a red card on Saturday afternoon before eventually conceding an injury-time equaliser to Leeds United.

Paul Heckingbottom’s side had taken the lead through Brad Potts. In the 32nd minute, Ben Whiteman was shown a yellow card and a few moments later, the midfielder could have easily earned himself a red card.

The Preston captain picking up a caution for pulling back Brenden Aaronson. Five minutes later, the midfielder went steaming into a 50-50 tackle with Jayden Bogle on the edge of the Preston penalty area.

He got some of the ball and a lot of the man, prompting an angry reaction from the Leeds players and then Daniel Farke, when they realised it was a player on a yellow card. Incredibly, no second yellow.

Paul Heckingbottom took Whiteman off at half-time, showing just how close he felt Whiteman was to a second yellow. Jobi McAnuff felt ref John Busby should have shown a second yellow card to Whiteman.

Farke could not understand the decision at the time and was himself, shown a yellow. Speaking on LUTV’s live coverage of the match, Dorigo was left stunned that a yellow card wasn’t forthcoming for Whiteman.

“Yes [it was a poor challenge from Whiteman]. An extremely fierce challenge. Bogle has obviously gone for the ball and one that he should be getting, and the defender just goes in way too aggressively.

“That sort of challenge these days is certainly punished. It looks like a yellow card. Neither have I,” the LUTV co-commentator continued, when commentator Bryn Law pointed out he had not seen a yellow.

Leeds were largely unlucky throughout Saturday’s draw

While many will point to the fact that Jack Whatmough scored an own goal in the 93rd minute which saw Leeds equalise, the Whites were somewhat unlucky during the main bulk of the game at Deepdale.

Dan James hit the bar while Whiteman really should have been shown a second yellow card, if not a red card by Busby. It is quite inexplicable that Busby felt the tackle did not require a yellow or even a red.

Leeds though maintain their unbeaten run going into the second half of December, going three without defeat after wins against Derby and Middlesbrough. But away from remains an issue for Farke’s Leeds.
