Three free agent attacking midfielders Leeds should consider; Argentina internationals, Dutch ace

Leeds United oversaw a complete revamp of their squad during the summer transfer window.

The Whites brought in nine new faces to compensate for the 16 players that departed, of which 14 can be considered regular members of last season’s first team squad.

However, one key area they failed to address was the number 10 position, with Leeds still lacking a replacement for Pablo Hernandez, who left over two years ago.

It was glaringly obvious at the weekend Leeds missed that player who could unlock a low defensive block, but all may not be lost with the market to sign free agents still open.

So, with that in mind, here is a look at three out of contract attacking midfielders Daniel Farke should consider.

Roberto Pereyra

Pereyra was released by Udinese during the summer, but at 32, he still has plenty left to give if last season is anything to go by.

In 34 Serie A appearances, Pereya netted five goals and provided eight assists, which is the type of numbers Leeds could do with from someone playing in midfield.

Pereyra has been capped 19 times by Argentina and also has a decent record in the Premier League from his days at Watford.

Papu Gomez

Another Argentina international but perhaps a tad unrealistic is Papu Gomez, who was released by Victor Orta’s Sevilla earlier this month.

Gomez was part of the Argentina squad that won the World Cup last year and was still a regular at Sevilla towards the end of last season.

The 35-year-old’s most impressive period of his career came at Atalanta, where he scored 59 goals and provided 72 assists in 252 matches. He would be a significant coup.

Jean-Paul Boetius

Perhaps more of a left-field name, but still with an abundance of top level experience is one-time capped Netherlands international Jean-Paul Boetius.

Boetius has over 100 appearances in both the Bundesliga and Eredivisie, scoring 36 goals and providing 44 assists across his spells in those top divisions.

The 29-year-old was most recently released by Hertha Berlin and is slightly younger than the previous two names, but could be a decent option.
