It has been a bad week for Frank Lampard and his Coventry City side, despite the England and Chelsea legend going into the week with two games at home – Leeds United and then Ipswich Town.
Leeds cruised to a 2-0 win at Coventry on Wednesday night when it should have really been double, or possibly triple that scoreline. But Leeds are Leeds, and Illan Meslier still produced two stunning saves.
Having heard Leeds fans’ latest rendition of Oasis’ Stop Crying Your Heart Out, Lampard gauded the Leeds support. Lampard cupped his ears and reminded Leeds fans of the 4-2 Derby play-off win in 2019.
Speaking after the match, Lampard was asked if he would like to comment on the gestures. A simple no, and all focus was on Coventry’s home game in the fourth round of The FA Cup against Ipswich Town.

Kalvin Phillips and Jack Clarke delight in Frank Lampard dismay
A bad week got worse for Lampard as Kieran McKenna’s struggling Premier League Ipswich came to the CBS Arena and secured a big 4-1 win. A possible banana skin, Ipswich dealt with Coventry with aplomb.
The Tractor Boys may be relegated this season but at least the win shows they have plenty to bring to the Championship next term. Two players at the heart of the win were born out of the Thorp Arch academy.
Jack Clarke scored two goals for Ipswich, his second and third for the club while Kalvin Phillips came into the side. Two crucial performances to rub salt into Lampard’s wounds after defeat to Leeds in the week.
Where does Kalvin Phillips’ long-term future lie after loan?
The England midfielder and Euro 2020 finalist is struggling. Often a bench player at Ipswich this term, the on-loan Manchester City ace needs a fresh start and the stage to go and rediscover his Elland Road form.
While he might have done well on Saturday, Phillips has struggled at Ipswich as he did at West Ham. His time at Man City has been a failure, with EADT journalist Matt Heath delivering a scathing Phillips review.
Andy Townsend says Leeds is the only place for Phillips to reignite his form and there have been some suggestions a return could materialise in 2025, if Leeds go up. Perhaps, it is a match made in heaven.
