‘They’ll move’: Journalist says Leeds may still make another signing before January transfer window

Journalist Ben Jacobs has suggested Leeds United will dip into the free agent market, but only if the right player becomes available.

Jacobs was speaking to Give Me Sport where he claimed it is ‘obvious’ that Leeds are still in need of a new left-back but will not just bring someone in ‘for the sake of it’.

Leeds made nine new signings during the summer transfer window but still arguably left themselves short in a couple of key positions.

The Whites could’ve done with adding a new number 10 to their squad and were clearly keen on doing so having gone close to signing Nadiem Amiri, but failed to find a suitable alternative.

As mentioned, left-back clearly remains an area of concern with Leeds having moved strongly for Luke Thomas in the final week of the window before he went to Sheffield United.

Jacobs suggests Leeds could dip into free agent market

Speaking on Leeds’ current left-back situation, Jacobs does not believe, at this stage, there is anyone available ‘that are right’ for Daniel Farke’s side, but says they will dip into the free agent market if the right player is out there.

He said: “I don’t expect Leeds to panic sign and get cover for cover’s sake. But it’s obvious to anyone who looks at what Leeds have got on paper that they still need to strengthen in that left-back position. So, if a free agent becomes available, they’ll move because it’s relatively low-risk and cost-effective.

“But right now, I just don’t think there are that many targets that are right for Leeds. There’s no point in just adding an extra body for the sake of it if they’re not going to benefit the football team. So, the left-back position is Firpo’s and Leeds will just be praying that he stays fit.”

While the summer transfer window slammed shut two weeks ago, clubs are still able to bring in free agents at any point during the year.

Like Jacobs said, though, there isn’t currently anyone out there that is better than what Leeds have got and so Farke will have to make do with Junior Firpo, Sam Byram and Jamie Shackleton as his options at left-back.

Providing they can stay fit, that should be more than enough to get by until January but it could certainly be worth looking at again once the window reopens.
