‘There will be a sale’… Sporting director says his club could sell £3m Leeds target in January

Hammarby sporting director Mikael Hjelmberg says his club could sell defender Nathaniel Adjei in the January window amid reports Leeds United are keen on landing the £3m-rated centre-back.

Adjei, 21, has starred for the Swedish side this season. He has played 26 of his 31 senior career games during the 2023 campaign. That form has attracted the attention of clubs in England ahead of January.

Leeds are one of nine clubs said to be tracking the Ghana U23 man, alongside Old Firm duo Celtic and Rangers. Another report states that a fee of £3m will tempt Hammarby to sell in the upcoming window.

Leeds are well-stocked in the middle of the defence. Joe Rodon and Pascal Struijk remain first choice, while Liam Cooper and Charlie Cresswell continue to play back-up. Cooper’s deal expires in the summer.

Rodon is only on loan and promotion may determine whether Leeds boast a chance of signing him from Tottenham on a permanent basis. Cresswell could be tempted to leave, as he struggles for game time.

So, Adjei could be targeted as the race to land the African defender hots up. Now, Hammarby’s sporting director Hjelmberg now says that his club may have to sell in the January window, if the price is right.

He states that Hammarby do not particularly want to sell Adjei – or his teammates, like Edvin Kurtulus and Viktor Djukanovic. But, that a sale could occur if clubs are willing to meet Hammarby’s price tag.

“It is not entirely out of the question that there will be a sale this winter. That’s how it is. But of all those players, our absolute ambition is they should stay. There have been offers that we have turned down.”
